New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ girls’ basketball team enters the 2024-25 season with a roster of talented but young players. And sometimes those teams can get overwhelmed in situations, such as the case on Dec. 5 as they hosted the visiting Lafayette Lady Rams. Behind collegebound prospect Dynasti Pierce, Lafayette coasted to a 56-20 victory over New Kent in the Bay Rivers District opener for both teams. Colonial Downs is set to hold a record number of races in the 2025 thoroughbred season. The Virginia Racing Commission approved a 44-day calendar of live racing for the venue. Colonial Downs will also host its first Kentucky Derby qualifier race on March 15, with The Virginia Derby serving as the host meet during the special three-day event. The live race season will begin with the aforementioned Virginia Derby, with the remainder calendar commencing on July 9 with live racing each Wednesday through Saturday. The race season is scheduled to conclude on Sept. 13.
