Devonte Fitzgerald, a sophomore wrestler at Central Christian College from New Kent, was named as an Arthure Ashe Jr. sports scholar. The award, which is honored periodically to promote higher education for people of color in America, is presented to honor undergraduate students who excelled in the classroom and the athletic field. The student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.2 or better and demonstrate a commitment to community service and leadership. After leading his college alma mater Mount St. Mary’s to two Northeast Conference tournament championships and one Northeast Conference regular season title, New Kent native Jamion Christian accepted a position to become the new men’s head basketball coach of Siena College in Albany. The announcement came Wednesday (May 2) afternoon, with a formal press conference held at 4 p.m. At Mount St. Mary’s, Christian compiled an overall record of 101-95 and a 67-39 conference record.
