Saturday night’s contest between New Kent’s Trojans and Warhill’s Lions featured two proud programs looking for win number five and better positioning to earn a bid into the regional playoffs. As part of the Feb. 3 matchup, the urgency to earn a spot went to the visiting Lions. Utilizing a tough 2-3 defense, strong second half shooting, and a rebound advantage, Warhill emerged with a 76-69 victory over the hosting Trojans. New Kent had a rough start, falling behind 6-1 early before Ryan Curle’s three-point shot calmed the host team’s nerves. But more panic set in as turnovers allowed Warhill…

But in a new year and a more confident basketball team, the Lady Trojans managed to exact a measure of revenge. New Kent showed resolve in a 48-45 victory over Smithfield, improving their record to 7-11 on the season. Powerhouse Lafayette cruises to victory over New Kent

By Robb Johnson | January 31, 2018 11:38 pm

This year’s rendition of New Kent’s Trojans’ basketball team has been one that has been a headscratcher if you only read box scores and results. And while the team has players that can get the ball down the court, a lack of a short bench and true number one score has caused issues, with the latest exploitation of the Trojans’ weaknesses occurring Jan. 31. Lafayette’s Keyshawn Jefferson takeover of a contest led to an onslaught as the Rams cruised to an 84-53 win over the hosting Trojans. Lafayette came out looking to run the Trojans out of the building, catapulting…

Jamestown’s Lady Eagles dominated New Kent Lady’s Trojans in their first encounter of the season. However, an ample opportunity presented to the hosting Lady Trojans primed them for a chance to better position themselves for a postseason run. They didn’t squander that opportunity. Lady Trojan Madison Foley scorched the scoreboard early, scoring the team’s first seven points on three field goals. Along with pressure defense and holding Jamestown without a field goal in…

By Andre Jones | January 29, 2018 10:11 pm

For a majority of the 2017-18 basketball season, Charles City Panthers head coach VaShaun Otey has been looking for his team to put together a strong four quarters of play on the hardwood. On Monday night, turning the tide of the contest in the third quarter and weathering pressure from King William’s Cavaliers resulted in the Panthers ending their losing skid at seven. Clippers have ‘Moore’ than enough to defeat New Kent

By Robb Johnson | January 27, 2018 6:00 am

There’s an old saying that “more is enough.” For the New Kent Trojans, facing the visiting Grafton Clippers on Jan. 26, Josh Moore was too much. Moore posted a game-high 30 points as Grafton romped New Kent 83-54 to sweep the season series. New Kent managed to hang with Grafton early on. After Trojan guard Ryan Curle’s three-pointer provided the hosts a lead to open the contest, it was Moore’s six straight points that put the visitors up for good. New Kent tried to slow the offense down, resulting in Brandon Coutu’s uncontested score followed an acrobatic basket by Curle…

Buzzkill: Yellow Jackets late runs spoil Charles City Senior Night

By Andre Jones | January 26, 2018 11:02 pm

There’s something about facing a team from the Eastern Shore and the fourth quarter that just doesn’t sit well with Charles City’s Panthers. That sentiment was echoed by Panthers’ head coach VaShaun Otey as he watched a competitive contest that consisted of 21 lead changes and six ties get out of hand in the final quarter as Northampton’s Yellow Jackets emerged with an 83-72 victory to spoil Jan. 26 Senior Night festivities. Action rallied back and forth in the first quarter as neither team could create any space from the other. It was a lay-up by Charles City’s Justis Crawley…
