Relay teams lead Charles City girls, boys to fourth place finishes

Behind wins from their respective 4×100 meter relay teams, Charles City’s girls and boys’ track teams earned four place finishes during an Apr. 19 home meet. On the boys’ side, the team of Cameron Vaden, Steven Williams Jr., Robert Dobson, and Jordan Cotman ran a time of 44.97 to easily win the event. Their time also automatically qualifies them for the VHSL Group 1A State championships. Charles City’s boys scored 64 points, finishing behind meet winner King William (140), Cumberland (106), and Hampton Roads Academy (99). After struggling in recent contests when New Kent had a chance, the Trojans returned to the win column Tuesday afternoon. Behind a strong pitching performance from Nate Kager, New Kent defeated Warhill 6-3 in the Bay Rivers District contest. The contest didn’t come without a test from the visiting Lions. After getting the first two outs, two consecutive errors by New Kent resulted in Warhill’s Sammy Rochard crossing the plate. New Kent’s Lady Trojans had no problem remaining undefeated as they toppled the visiting Warhill Lady Lions 11-1 in Tuesday afternoon’s contest. The hosts received a great pitching effort from Gracie Ellis, who struck out five of the first nine batters she faced. Meanwhile, the Lady Trojan defense backing her up prevented any baserunners until the fourth inning. Early second half scores enough to lift Northampton over New Kent

Some games aren’t meant to have winners or losers. However, a Friday night contest against the visiting Northampton Yellow Jackets and New Kent’s Trojans provided a beautiful display of defense. However, that pageantry turned into chaos for the hosts within the first four minutes of the second half. New Kent’s Lady Trojans entered the Apr. 12 Bay Rivers contest against Tabb on the momentum of two consecutive shutouts and scoring 13 goals. However, it was the visiting Lady Tigers who reversed both the fortunes and the script against the hosts. Fulks returns to area to lead New Kent High School football program

New Kent’s search for a new head football coach led them to a familiar name that new the area pretty well. John Fulks was tabbed to lead the Trojans on the gridiron after Monday night’s school board meeting. He will look to return a program that was dominant in the early 2000’s back into prominence. Fulks will bring his hard-nosed, no nonsense head coaching actions to the football field. He led the Essex Trojans to a 60-19 record in five years before his departure.
