Bringing in a new sport to a school system and transitioning into competitive play takes time, hard work, and dedication from both players and the coaching staff. For Charles City’s High School newly formed co-ed soccer team, a combination of progression and a group of athletes have first-year head coach Grant Martin’s expectations of developing a successful program. Neither a one-hour thunderstorm delay nor a steady second half rain failed to deter New Kent’s Lady Trojans in their quest for victory number one in their soccer home opener. Despite wet conditions, the hosts scored three second half goals Thursday night to pull away from Washington & Lee’s Eagles for a 4-0 shutout. Allen wins two events as Panthers finish fourth at home meet
Charles City’s Tyler Allen finished in a tie for first in the boys’ long jump and joined teammates Cameron Vaden, Mason Jefferson, and Troy Crawley to claim gold in the 4×100 meter relay to help Charles City to a fourth place finish during an Apr. 5 regular season home meet. Timely hitting plus solid pitching coupled with opposition mistakes constituted a winning formula for New Kent’s Trojans on a frigid, windy afternoon on the baseball diamond. If Charles City’s baseball team played only even-numbered innings, they would have ended in a 0-0 tie with the visiting Colonial Beach Drifters in the Apr. 4 contest. New Kent’s Kowal breaks pole vault meet record at Shoot the Gun & Run Invitational
Griffin Kowal cleared 13 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to not only win the event but set a new meet record and help New Kent finish sixth overall in Saturday’s annual Shoot the Gun & Run Invitational track meet hosted by New Kent. The Trojans scored 54 points. Good Counsel (Md.) won the team title with 96 followed by Lafayette (87) and Courtland (63). Charles City placed 14th with five points.
