Weathering a fast start by Poquoson’s visiting Islanders, New Kent’s Trojans took command of Tuesday night’s basketball encounter behind a devastating press. By the first quarter’s end, the Trojans had wiped out a double-digit Poquoson lead, moved ahead to stay, and were well on their way to an 83-57 triumph. The victory solidified New Kent’s hold on the third seeded spot in next week’s 3A East Conference 25 tournament. New Kent’s Trojans wasted little time in asserting dominance over Charles City’s visiting Panthers. Back-to-back threes from guards Kyle Claytor and Jared Lugg helped the hosts vault to a 10-2 lead less than two minutes in. Just before Friday night’s 3A East Conference 25 wrestling tournament got underway, New Kent coach Mike Faus said he anticipated a two-way battle for the championship trophy between his Trojans and Poquoson’s Islanders. The event, held in New Kent’s gym, lived up to his expectations. Of the 14 weight classes, New Kent prevailed in seven while Poquoson claimed six.
