New Kent comeback falls short in soccer opener
Despite playing one man short for most of the second half, New Kent’s host Trojans managed to erase most of a three-goal lead Colonial Heights’ fast-starting Colonials built in the first half of Tuesday’s season opening soccer battle. And an apparent game-tying goal on an indirect free kick appeared to pull the hosts even with the Colonials just past the second half’s midpoint. But that scored was waved off, enabling the visitors to cling to a one-goal advantage. New Kent finishes second in season opening track meet at Charles City
New Kent’s Jon Swartout won the boys’ 1600 meter run while twin brothers Josh and Joe Dixon each claimed a throwing event as the Trojans earned a second place finish at Charles City’s regular season track meet Tuesday afternoon. On the boys’ side, New Kent scored 128 points, good enough for second place out of seven teams at the meet. Middlesex finished on top with 153 points, with Armstrong finishing in third place with 121 points. New Kent’s Kowal captures pole vault title at state indoor track championships
New Kent’s Griffin Kowal cleared 14 feet, 3 inches to easily win the pole vault competition at the 3A state indoor track meet held Feb. 26-27 at Liberty University in Lynchburg. Kowal entered as the top seed in the event, having cleared 14-6 during the regular season. He finished well ahead of Broadway’s Jonathan Miller, who came in second at 12-6, and came close to the 14-5.5 meet record. Four New Kent players earn All-Conference hoops honors
A trio of New Kent Trojan basketball players and one Lady Trojan have landed on respective All-Conference basketball teams. Trojan leading scorer Kyle Claytor, a junior, has been named to the All-Colonial Rivers Conference 25 first team while teammates Amari Brown (sophomore) and Justin Cox (senior) were chosen for the second team. Junior Jared Lugg and freshman C.J. Reeders received honorable mention. Sophomore Brynne Jones, meanwhile, was chosen for the girls All-Colonial Rivers Conference 25 second team. Teammate Kelsey Yates received honorable mention.
New Kent’s Darber wins state weight class; Trojans place ninth overall in 3A wrestling
New Kent’s Caden Darber won his weight division while teammate Cade Sanders placed second in his classification at the 3A state wrestling championships held Feb. 19-20 in Salem. The Trojans scored 49 points to finish ninth overall. Darber (46-5) opened competition in the 132-pound division with a 10-0 major decision over Staunton River’s Nathan Kearnes. In the semifinals, he posted a narrow 3-1 decision over Cave Spring’s Josh McCray before easing past Christianburg’s Josh Linkous 9-3 for the title. Jones wins one state event, takes second in another to lead New Kent to 8th place finish in 3A swimming
Julianna Jones captured first in one individual event and second in another to lead New Kent’s girls swimming team to an eighth place finish in the 3A state meet held Feb. 19 at the SwimRVA/Collegiate School Aquatics Center in Richmond. Jones won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.35, edging Cave Spring’s Paige Assaid, the top seed from earlier preliminaries, who finished in 52.88. Jones was seeded third heading into the final, but was ranked first coming into the event following regional competition. Jones took second in the 200-yard freestyle, an event she won a year ago. Christian tabbed interim head coach of Oklahoma City Blue
Jarrell Christian, a native of Quinton and 2004 graduate of New Kent High School, has been elevated to interim head coach of the Oklahoma City Blue in the National Basketball Developmental League (NBDL). Christian, who is in his second year with the organization, had served as an assistant coach with the Blue, a subsidiary of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Oklahoma City Thunder. Poquoson upsets New Kent in tourney quarterfinal, ending Trojans’ season
One week ago, New Kent’s host Trojans piled up 83 points on Poquoson’s Islanders, effectively blowing the visitors away by a 26-point margin. Tuesday night in the same gym with the same Islanders in town, the visitors managed a measure of revenge. In a game that went down to the wire, sixth-seeded Poquoson upset third-seeded New Kent 67-64 in the quarterfinal round of the 3A Conference 25 basketball tournament, closing the Trojans’ season on a dismal note. Hot shooting Rams pull away for win over New Kent
Shooting at a 61 percent clip from the floor in the first half, Lafayette’s Rams built a 20-point lead on New Kent’s host Trojans. After the break, the hosts managed to cut the deficit in half but no closer as the Rams held on for an 82-63 win. Thursday’s Senior Night contest closed out the regular season for the Trojans, who are 9-13 entering post-season play in next week’s 3A Conference 25 tournament.
