Down two games to one, New Kent’s Lady Trojans closed out Thursday night’s fourth game with a 5-0 run to deny Warhill’s visiting Lions a volleyball victory. The hosts then carried that momentum into a decisive fifth game, holding off the Lions until Sydney Griffith’s kill and Cortney Pickett’s service ace produced the final two points in a 17-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 17-15 Lady Trojan triumph. Carlin leads New Kent to cross-country win
Andrew Carlin pulled away over the final 200 meters to capture first place individual honors and lead New Kent’s host Trojans to a cross-country victory over a pair of Bay Rivers foes. Carlin toured his home 5K course in 16:53.97 Wednesday afternoon, sprinting away from Poquoson’s Mak Casey who placed second in 17:01.62. In team scoring, New Kent totaled 27 points, well ahead of second place Jamestown’s 46. Poquoson finished with 85. Middlesex takes charge, tops Charles City in home finale
Charles City Lady Panthers volleyball team has shown improvement during their season of resurrection. But the inability to return serves played a pivotal role as the hosts fell in straight sets 25-13, 25-7, 25-16 to the visiting Middlesex Lady Chargers during the Oct. 22 home finale. Both teams exchanged scores in the early going of the opening set before the visitors took control to claim the first frame. New Kent’s Lady Trojans led most of the way in cruising to an easy three-game sweep of Smithfield’s visiting Packers 25-7, 25-10, 25-17 in Tuesday night volleyball. New Kent forged ahead 6-0 in the opening game and never looked back. Game two produced more of the same. The Packers stepped up their play in game three, taking a 14-13 lead midway through. New Kent High School’s golf team finishes third in Group 3A state championships
New Kent High School’s golf team shot a combined 657 over a two-day period at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon to finish in third place in the Group 3A State Championships on Oct. 12-13. The Trojans finished behind host school and eventual winner Abingdon High School (608), runner-up Hidden Valley (624), and ahead of Bay Rivers District foe Warhill (731) who finished in fourth. Statistically, Charles City was only outgained by a mere yard offensively when invading the confines of Middlesex High School during Friday night’s Tidewater District contest. The problem was the Panthers inability to keep possession of the ball. The visiting Panthers committed five turnovers and muffed three onside kicks as they fell to the host Chargers 53-18. New Kent suffers more growing pains in loss to Smithfield
In a vast departure from seasons past, New Kent’s football team has presented stiff challenges to every opponent faced so far this season. Friday’s Senior Night clash with Smithfield’s invading Packers was no different. The Trojans overcame a 20-6 halftime deficit to overtake the Packers. But as is often the case with young teams (New Kent has only six seniors on its 37-man roster) in the throes of rebuilding, untimely errors helped the visitors escape with a 33-20 victory. Charles City Lady Panthers volleyball team snapped an eight-game losing streak and claimed their first home victory in impressive fashion with a 25-10, 25-7, 25-5 sweep of the Carver Wolverines on Oct. 15.
