New Kent High School’s golf team coached by Charles Davis claimed the Conference 25 championship in the match event played at Royal New Kent on Sept. 28. The Trojans posted a score of 313, easily outdistancing runner-up Warhill by 27 strokes. Robb Kinder (76) finished in second place in the event, one stroke behind Alex Waltman of Colonial Heights. Parker Wallace (78) and Cole Baldwin (78) shared third place, while Bryce Paige’s score was good enough for fifth. Jackson Gray’s 87 and Ted Gentile’s 94 rounded out the scoring for New Kent. Colonial Beach’s experience sinks Lady Panthers’ attempt for win
Charles City’s Lady Panthers volleyball team continue to get their feet wet as they become acclimated to a season of learning and rebuilding. Ironically, it was the visiting Colonial Beach Lady Drifters who made a splash in a Sept. 28 non-district contest. Behind the experience of seven seniors and four juniors, Colonial Beach coasted in straight sets 25-8, 25-11, 25-14 over the Lady Panthers, never trailing throughout the match. Thacker field goal, runs by Barnes and Morris lift New Kent to first football win
Julian Thacker utilized an unorthodox method to audition for the role of place-kicker on New Kent’s football team. He sent a video to the coaching staff. Apparently, the footage impressed the coaches. Thacker landed the job, and Friday night, the junior kicker verified the coaches’ decision. With six seconds left on the clock, Thacker booted a 19-yard field goal to break a 13-13 deadlock and hand New Kent a 16-13 victory over Bruton’s host Panthers. With a little bit of luck, New Kent’s Lady Trojans could have taken a two games to none lead over Poquoson’s visiting Islanders and been in control of the teams’ best-of-five volleyball clash Thursday night. Instead, the Lady Trojans blew a late lead in game one before evening the affair with a game two win. New Kent High School golf team shot 2358, accumulating an average of 314.4 through an eight-match season en route to claiming the Bay Rivers District team title. The Trojans won five of the eight regular season contests, dethroning powerhouse Jamestown from the top position. Parker Wallace’s average of 75.47 not only was the best on the team, but topped the league overall. Charles City volleyball wins first game
Charles City’s girls volleyball team didn’t have to wait long to earn their first win of the season, picking up a victory in a Tidewater District contest. The Lady Panthers defeated Carver High School (formerly Chesterfield Community) in straight sets on the Lady Eagles home court. The team won the final set in thrilling fashion 27-25, with Charity Jones contributing the final point to sweep the game 3-0.

New Kent’s golf team dethroned Jamestown from its long tenure as regular season champions after it finished second at The Hamptons golf course Tuesday afternoon. Trojan golfers posted a 304 to finish second at the match, but had accumulated enough points during the eight-match regular season to become Bay Rivers District champions. New Kent shot a cumulative score of 2,358 which is ten more than runner-up Jamestown. So far this football season, New Kent’s offense has put up points in its first two regular season games only to watch leads disappear as the defense faltered, giving up points in bunches late in both contests.
