Opening the 2015-16 season in an Aug. 27 contest against visiting Southampton Lady Indians, New Kent Lady Trojan field hockey head coach Matt Duckworth said it would take some time for his young team to get used to playing at the next level. For the Lady Trojans, some valuable lessons and clutch goals were key in a 5-1 victory over Southampton. New Kent trounces Charles City 62-27 in benefit football game

Charles City’s Panthers and New Kent’s Trojans collided on the gridiron for the first time in 15 years last Friday evening. And while the record books will remain unchanged, the benefit game reaped just that for the visiting Trojans. Trojan running back Davion Barnes accumulated 274 rushing yards along with four touchdowns as New Kent trounced Charles City 62-27 in the exhibition contest with more than 600 spectators on hand in the rivalry of schools that are 20 minutes apart. Freedom Martial Arts students win medals at Junior Olympics

Local students of Freedom Martial Arts in Quinton competed at the 2015 AAU Jr. Olympic Games in Virginia Beach on Aug. 1-2. Five students earned medals in 12 events that they participated in at the event. Olivia Altizer won three gold medals in breaking, weapons, and forms, while Sierra Altizer earned a gold medal in breaking, silver in forms, and a bronze in weapons. Dylan Watson also brought home a gold medal, taking the top spot in forms along with earning a bronze in breaking. Cox named to All-Metro second team

Trey Cox, a first basemen for New Kent High School’s baseball team, was named to the second team All-Richmond Metro team. Cox becomes the second Trojan to earn the distinguished honor. Former Trojan Dakota Oxendine was tabbed to the second team in 2013 as an outfielder. Cox completed the 2014-15 campaign as a first-team Conference 25 selection and named to the Honorable Mention 3A East Regional team.

Williams named sports information director for Shaw University

Jolisa Williams, a 2008 graduate of Charles City High School and former Lady Panther basketball standout, has been named as the new sports information director at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Williams earned sports management degrees, with her undergrad studies at St. Augustine University in Raleigh and master’s degree from Virginia State University. She served as assistant sports information director at Virginia State from 2012-13 before accepting an elevated position of sports information director at Richard Bland Community College in 2014. The Bay Rivers Buccaneers fielded three teams this summer for the football season. Approximately 58 players from seven areas, including New Kent and Charles City, helped compose the teams. The 8U team players consisted of Cooper Adkins, Ira Burrell II, La’Vonte Crawley, Landon Farries, Brandon Foster, Caleb Holmes, Andrew Kent, Demitrius “Meaty” Knorr, Adam Moore, Sam Nickerson, Liam OConnell, Owen Passut, Jarred Petersen, Alexis Powell, Reese Poole, Jackson Strickland and John West. Barnes to participate in football super combine

Davion Barnes, a rising senior at New Kent High School, has been selected to participate in the Blue-Grey Classic football super combine in Canton, Ohio on June 19-20. Barnes received the special invite by participating regional combine at the Washington Redskins training center in Richmond. He was selected as an elite prospect and will have the opportunity to perform in front of collegiate scouts. Barnes will enjoy touring the pro football Hall of Fame as well as have the opportunity to earn a trip to be considered an All-American candidate.
