Carlin, Kowal earn bronze at Group 3A state track championships

New Kent’s boys’ track and field team earned a 16th place finish in the Group 3A State Track & Field Championships last Saturday at Harrisonburg High School. Trojan distance runner Andrew Carlin earned bronze in the boys’ 3200 meter run, running 9:47.80 in the event. He also finished fifth in the 1600 meter run, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:32.14. Griffin Kowal also earned a top three podium spot, clearing 14’0” in the pole vault to earn third place. Mason Jefferson helped account for all nine points for Charles City’s Panthers track and field team as they finished 17th in the Group 1A State Track & Field meet on June 5-6 at Radford University. Jefferson finished fourth in the boys’ 100 meter dash with a time of 11.25 and followed that time up with a time of 23.20 in the 200 meter dash, good enough for an eighth place finish. Miracle comeback by Park View eliminates New Kent softball

For four innings, New Kent’s Lady Trojans controlled a Conference 25 first round softball matchup against visiting Park View-South Hill’s Lady Dragons. But a miracle comeback by the guests resulted in a stunning upset, ending the hosts’ season. Park View scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning and added one run in each of the sixth and seventh frames as the visiting Lady Dragons topped New Kent 6-5. Charles City third in Conference 42 track meet championships

Mason Jefferson won two individual events, as well as joined Charles City’s 4×100 meter relay team to help the Panthers to a third place finish at the Conference 42 championships on May 21. Despite rainy conditions, Jefferson claimed the 100 and 200 meter dashes in times of 11.82 and 24.22, respectively. He joined teammates Kyle Jones, Jaquane Wyatt, and Walter Gordon in the 4×100 meter relay, running a time of 46.24 to win the event. Trojan pole vaulter Griffin Kowal set a meet record with a clearance of 13’9” while teammate Joshua Dixon also earned a first place win in the shot with a heave of 41’9½” as New Kent’s boys finished second at the Conference 25 meet on May 19 on their home track. Freedom Martial Arts win four titles at state AAU competition

Freedom Martial Arts, based out of Quinton in western New Kent County, recently achieved success at the Virginia AAU State Tournament on May 9 in Fredericksburg. Led by Master John Altizer, Freedom Martial Arts accumulated four first place titles at the event, with winners advancing to the 2015 AAU Junior Olympics in Virginia Beach this upcoming August. Winners were John Michael Jingluski (sparring), Zach Wiseman (sparring and forms), Dylan Watson (forms), and Sierra Altizer (forms).
