New Kent’s Lady Trojans outscored Lafayette’s visiting Rams 2-1 in the second half of their Tuesday night soccer encounter. Unfortunately for the hosts, the Rams totaled three unanswered first half goals, translating into a 4-2 win. “That was a good second half,” Lady Trojan coach Barry Rountree said afterward. “We’re getting better every game, and we’re not getting timed out as much. Allen, Smith named female athletes of year at respective universities

Karley Allen, a 2012 graduate from New Kent High School, and Deborah Smith, a former standout from Charles City High School, were both named female athletes of the year at their respective universities. Allen received the honor from UVA-Wise during a recent ceremony. A rising junior, Allen was named to the All-Mountain East and All-Atlantic Region first teams in volleyball. She led the conference in kills, was third in passing efficiency, and eighth in digs. Smith earned her honor as a member of North Carolina A&T’s women’s basketball team. A May 4 Monday afternoon matchup found the host Lady Panthers taking on Conference 42 favorite Mathews Lady Blue Devils in a softball contest contrasting of experience levels. It was apparent the older, much more veteran Lady Blue Devils had the hosts’ number. The guests pushed across 11 second inning runs as Mathews had no trouble dropping the Lady Panthers 26-0. After going more than a month without a soccer win, New Kent’s Trojans reversed the trend in decisive fashion with a 6-0 conquest of West Point’s visiting Pointers. Charles City boys second at home meet

Mason Jefferson was a double-event winner and joined as part of Charles City boys’ 4×100 meter relay team as the Panthers finished second during an Apr. 30 four-team meet. Charles City scored 68.5 points, finishing runner-up to Lancaster’s 111.5 and ahead of Essex’s 22 and West Point’s 21 points. Jefferson won the 100 and 200 meter dash with times of 11.64 and 24.22, respectively.
