Tabb’s Tigers collected 11 hits while New Kent’s host Trojans totaled 10, giving the impression of a reasonably close baseball game. The difference, however, rested with which team could convert those hits into runs, and the Tigers got the best of that category. New Kent Coyotes capture flight in volleyball tournament
The New Kent Juniors Volleyball Coyotes team won their flight in the 16s division at the Williamsburg Volleyball Club Revolutionary Rumble Tournament last weekend. The team’s record in the event was seven wins, two loses, and one tie. The team started practices in December 2014, and has been competing since mid-January. The Rumble was their last event in the 2015 season. Other notable finishes included second in a 12-team event at the Richmond Volleyball Club in March. Taking advantage of the controversial “international tie-breaker rule,” Grafton’s Clippers scored once in the ninth inning to escape with a 3-2 softball win over New Kent’s host Lady Trojans. After one extra inning of play, the rule kicks in, allowing the team at-bat to start with a runner on second base. New Kent’s Trojans surrendered a goal barely two minutes into Tuesday night’s soccer match with Poquoson’s invading Islanders. Caitlin McClain won two events while Darren Jones captured one to lead New Kent’s track teams in Wednesday’s home meet that featured all 10 high schools from the Bay Rivers District. McClain won the shot put (33-7) and discus (96-10) to score 20 of the Lady Trojans’ 20½ points for the meet. “It’s been quite a humbling journey for me to get where I am today.” That quote by New Kent native Jarell Christian summed up his feelings on his path from a small county to a career in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Christian is a 2004 graduate of New Kent High School who now makes his home in Oklahoma City. He is an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Blue, the National Basketball Developmental League (NBDL) affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
