After losing lead, New Kent’s late rally falls short

By Alan Chamberlain | April 21, 2015 9:44 pm

Chalk up New Kent’s Tuesday baseball loss as the one that got away. The host Trojans managed three-run leads on two occasions and held a 5-3 advantage with only two innings to go. But during a disastrous sixth inning that featured five wild pitches and a passed ball, York’s Falcons added five runs, setting the stage for an eventual 8-7 victory. “There are things that you have to do that are non-negotiable in baseball, and we didn’t do them. You’ve got to clean up your game,” said Trojan coach Ronnie Cox, pointing to what transpired in the sixth frame. “We…

Lady Trojans stopped on two-hitter

By Alan Chamberlain | April 21, 2015 8:53 pm

York’s Lady Falcons combined aggressive base running with the pitching of Chelsey Evans to shut out New Kent’s host Lady Trojans in Tuesday softball action. Evans fired a two-hitter while the Falcon offense produced all the runs the team needed in the first two innings on the way to a 3-0 win. She struck out nine and did not allow a walk. The hosts never threatened during the contest. Madison Beasley singled in the second inning and Stephanie Torrence hit safely in the fourth, but that was the extent of the Lady Trojan attack. “We were a little bit flat…

New Kent shocks once beaten Warhill with three-hit, 4-0 shutout

By Alan Chamberlain | April 18, 2015 6:07 pm

Coming off a 19-0 drubbing of Lafayette the day before, Warhill’s Lady Lions rode an 8-1 record into Saturday’s softball encounter at New Kent, a team that had just risen above the .500 mark earlier this week with back-to-back wins, including a 4-0 decision at Lafayette. Either the Lion bats never made the bus trip or the visitors could not solve Lady Trojan pitcher Destiny Eberhard’s delivery. Eberhard shackled the Lions on three hits while the Lady Trojan defense played flawless ball behind her for six frames. Those factors entered into a 4-0 shutout victory, raising New Kent’s record to…

Warhill uses 11-run third inning to trounce New Kent 18-2

By Alan Chamberlain | April 18, 2015 4:35 pm

On a Saturday afternoon made for baseball — temperature in the upper 70’s with a gentle breeze blowing under clear blue skies — New Kent’s Trojans owned a 2-1 lead heading into the third inning against Warhill’s invading Lions. The hosts appeared up to the task of winning their second in row after rallying from a six-run deficit less than 24 hours earlier to top Bruton 10-9. Unfortunately, disaster struck. Warhill erupted for 11 third inning runs to forge ahead 12-2. And today there would be no comeback as the Lions roared to an 18-2 triumph. “We were up 2-1…

Cox walk-off RBI single caps wild finish in New Kent’s 10-9 comeback victory

By Alan Chamberlain | April 17, 2015 11:34 pm

Back in the first inning, New Kent’s Trey Cox committed a base running blunder with the bases loaded, resulting in a double play that took the hosts out of a potential big inning in their quest to overcome a 4-0 Bruton Panther lead. In the end, however, he would make amends. Coming to bat in a tie game in the bottom of the seventh and final inning with two away and the winning run perched at third, Cox stroked a walk-off RBI single to lift New Kent to a 10-9 victory. Friday’s triumph ended a three-game losing skid for the…

Lady Trojans top Bruton 6-3 for second win in two days

By Alan Chamberlain | April 17, 2015 9:37 pm

New Kent’s Lady Trojans used a four-run third inning to move ahead for good on the way to a 6-3 softball conquest of Bruton’s visiting Panthers. Friday’s outcome marked two wins in two days for the hosts who improved to 5-3. A day earlier, Brittany LaPrade pitched a no-hitter as the Lady Trojans won 4-0 at Lafayette. “This makes me feel good,” said Lady Trojan coach Nicole O’Bier, pointing to her team’s performance coming off a weeklong spring break. “I’d liked to have been a lot further ahead, but Bruton is an improving team,” she said. “We need to be…

Late Essex goal forges tie, foils New Kent bid to reverse losses

By Alan Chamberlain | April 16, 2015 12:39 am

Protecting a 2-1 lead and with time rapidly running out, chances for New Kent’s host Trojans ending a two-match soccer losing streak brightened with every second ticking off the clock. A last minute Essex goal, however, denied the hosts a victory celebration. Essex’s Camden Hilton scored off a corner kick with just under a minute left in regulation to forge a 2-2 deadlock. Two subsequent overtime periods failed to resolve Wednesday night’s affair, which went into the record books as a tie. “I feel like my guys played a clean game,” said first-year New Kent coach Keith Grant, whose team…
