Falcons finish undefeated campaign with overtime win

New Kent Falcons Gridiron Midget Light team finished off an undefeated season as they defeated Western Navy 6-0 on Nov. 9 in a game that came down to the wire. Despite defeating Western Navy 20-7 during the regular season, the teams played to a stalemate through regulation. The Falcons took the lead as offensive lineman opened a hole for Logan Powell to give New Kent a 6-0 advantage. Upcoming basketball season highlighted by tough slates

With the release of the 2013-14 basketball schedule, it’s apparent that postseason success garners attention. Just ask the Charles City Lady Panthers. After its first state quarterfinal appearance last year, the Lady Panthers will face one of the toughest schedules in team history. The team, that returns four starters, will open up at home against Rappahannock on Dec. 4, before a five game road swing, with the last game a Dec. 16 with Group 3A John Marshall. Trojans exhibit character in coping with teammate’s loss

Coping with the tragic and untimely death on Tuesday of linebacker Jacob Vick, New Kent’s Trojans elected to travel to Bruton and take on the host Panthers in honor of their fallen teammate. And even though the final on the scoreboard read Bruton 49 New Kent 7, the outcome didn’t matter. With the entire roster garnering quality playing time, New Kent’s Lady Trojans cruised past Bruton’s visiting Panthers in straight sets (25-22, 25-11, 25-16) to cap a successful Senior Night celebration. During the regular season, New Kent’s Lady Trojans scored an early goal at the expense of Lafayette’s visiting Rams and made that slim margin stand up for a 1-0 victory. Last week in the teams’ Oct. 27 rematch, this time in the Colonial River Conference tournament quarterfinals, the host Lady Trojans duplicated their earlier scoring effort.
