A 13-second letdown by the host Charles City Panthers at the end of the first half would turn what once was a competitive contest into a lead that the visiting Middlesex Chargers would never relinquish. Middlesex quarterback Marques Holmes tossed a touchdown and ran another one in with less than a minute left until the game’s midpoint as the Chargers eclipsed the Panthers 28-12 in the Tidewater District clash. Working with early lead, NK topples Northampton, 4-2

Building a three goal lead in the first half, New Kent’s Lady Trojans held off Northampton’s visiting Yellow Jackets the rest of the way en route to a 4-2 field hockey win. Last Thursday’s outcome raised the hosts’ record to 8-6 and increased their chances of hosting a first round game in next week’s conference playoffs. “We moved the ball very efficiently so it was just a matter of finding the right holes,” said Lady Trojan coach Matt Duckworth. Charles City demolished 82-6 in district opener by KW

If what Charles City Panthers received from the Group 2A 10th-ranked King William Cavaliers was a rude awakening, they may never want to go to sleep again. Despite taking an early lead, the host Panthers were outmatched and crushed by the visiting Cavaliers 82-6 in the Tidewater District opener for both teams. NKHS 4th place state finish highlights season’s success

New Kent High School’s golf team earned shot a team total of 646 to garner a fourth place finish in the Group 3A state championships at Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg on Oct. 14-15. Travis Frazier, the team captain, led the team with rounds of 72 and 79. Teammate Cole Baldwin posted scores of 82/75 while other team members Parker Wallace and Jordan Peck posted scores of 87/84 and 86/81 respectively. Cole Hitchcock and Austin Pierce also participated at the state level, posting scores of 100/86 and 91/86. Lady Trojans control rallies, keep Smithfield winless

New Kent head coach Cyndi Burnett said after the game that her team practices long rallies every day. Apparently, that preparation paid dividends when Smithfield’s Lady Packers rolled into town. The Lady Trojans won all but one long rally against invading Smithfield en route to a 25-13, 25-17, 25-19 sweep over their district rival. The hosts opened up the match jumping up 4-1 and then doubling up Smithfield 14-7.
