Early goal decisive as NK defense preserves 1-0 win
Less than one minute into their Tuesday night field hockey clash with Lafayette’s invading Rams, New Kent’s Lady Trojans owned a 1-0 lead. And the hosts’ defense made that slim advantage hold up. The Lady Trojans turned back every Lafayette scoring threat over the next 59 minutes of play to preserve a 1-0 victory, upping their record to 7-5. Taylor Bland’s point-blank range shot off an assist from Liz Heath just 35 seconds into the match proved to be the game winner. New Kent golf qualifies for states
New Kent High School’s golf team finished second in the first Group 3A east sectional tournament with a team score of 325 to qualify for the Group 3A state championships at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg on Oct. 14-15. Travis Frazier paced the Trojans with a score of 78. Joining Frazier is Cole Hitchcock with a round of 81, and teammates Parker Wallace and Cole Baldwin, who both shot 83 respectively. As Taylor Williams retrieved the ball from the Tabb goal, her New Kent Lady Trojan teammates rushed to her side, touching off a wild celebration that could match or exceed any victory celebration. New Kent head coach Dan Rounds summed up last Friday’s Tabb-New Kent football clash in one sentence. “[Tabb] definitely executed and we didn’t have an answer for them defensively. That’s it. Period,” he said. The visiting Tigers rolled over the Trojans 42-7, spoiling New Kent’s homecoming celebration. New Kent’s Lady Trojans had a tall task ahead of them when powerhouse Jamestown rolled into town Tuesday. And by tall, we’re speaking of the visiting Lady Eagles front line. Sisters Maria and Kelly Esch, along with senior teammate Alex Walther, all whom stand 5’10” or taller, used their height advantage in propelling Jamestown (14-1) to a 25-11, 25-16, 25-18 sweep of the Lady Trojans (11-4). Jason Pelton took first place in the men’s 5K while Jessica Burcham claimed the top spot in the women’s 5K at the Jenna Bash Festival on Aug. 3. Pelton paced the pack with a time of 20:25 to earn top honors among male competitors. B.J. Rountree’s field goal snaps New Kent’s 12-game losing streak
Practice makes perfect — or so the old adage goes. New Kent’s field goal unit, however, has modified that saying somewhat. Just add the words “a little” in front of “practice.” Friday night, Sawyer Rountree’s 31-yard field goal with 26 seconds left in the game lifted the host Trojans to an 11-8 victory over York’s Falcons.
