York first half ends NK streak

New Kent’s Lady Trojans scored the only goal of the second half in their field hockey encounter with York’s visiting Falcons. Unfortunately, the Falcons registered five before intermission to hand the hosts a 5-1 setback. The Sept. 16 loss ended New Kent’s unbeaten string at four games. Using their front line height advantage to force a decisive fifth set, Lafayette’s Rams appeared to take charge in Tuesday night’s volleyball match at New Kent. But the host Lady Trojans had a bit more left in the tank. Led by middle blocker Katie Ilch and libero Skylar Cossaboon, the hosts wrested control from the Rams midway through the final set. After taking the opening frame, New Kent’s Lady Trojans found themselves trailing the Lady Falcons of York 21-14 in the second period. No problem. New Kent High School and Charles City High School have announced their 2013-2014 football schedules. Charles City will open up at Amelia County tomorrow (Aug. 30). The Panthers will host Cumberland on Sept. 6 to open up the home slate. The Panthers, who transferred to the Tidewater District, will face powerhouse King William on Oct. 11 to begin district play.
