Jones, Savage medal at elite track meet

Charles City’s Daron Jones and New Kent’s Austin Savage each earned bronze medals at the Milestat.com Elite track gala on Saturday, June 9 at Sportsbackers Stadium in Richmond. Jones placed third in the boys’ high jump with a clearance of 6’0”, while Savage ran a time of 1:57.15 in the 800 meter run to garner his medal. Jones also earned a medal in the triple jump with a fourth place finish, leaping 42’8¾.” Other participants included New Kent’s Tanner Smith and Hunter Ferrell, as well as Charles City’s Sara Whitehead. Williams qualifies for national rodeo

Blaine Williams, a seventh grade student at New Kent Middle School, has earned a position on Virginia’s National Junior High rodeo team. Williams will travel to the ninth annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR) in Gallup, New Mexico, June 23-29 and compete in the boys’ goat tie and ribbon roping competition. NJHFR features more than 1,000 contestants in 41 states and five Canadian provinces and Australia and provides more than $100,000 in scholarship money.

Ask New Kent Lady Trojan coach Nicole O’Bier about the game plan for advancing in the Group AA Region I softball tournament and she’ll answer, “Keep winning.” Although pushed to extra innings, that’s what the Lady Trojans accomplished in the May 27 opening round — a 1-0 triumph over Culpeper’s Blue Devils, runners-up in the Battlefield District. Brittany LaPrade’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning clinched the win. The drive, lofted over the head of Culpeper left fielder Hanna Davidson, scored Paige Simpson. Trojans ousted in Region Tourney

Trailing Culpeper’s Blue Devils 5-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh and final frame, New Kent’s host Trojans mounted a comeback that brought the winning run to the plate with only one away.
