Lady Trojans fall in regional semifinals

New Kent’s Lady Trojans did not register a hit against King George’s Taylor Brandt as they fell 1-0 in the regional semifinals at King George. Despite the lack of offensive power, New Kent remained in a scoreless affair heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. With a runner on base, King George’s Kari McCullough connected with a blooper to center field. The hosts Shelby King proceeded to home plate, beating the throw by a few inches and winning the game in a walk-off. New Kent’s Lady Trojans finish their campaign with a 17-6 record.

NK track team finishes 11th as 3200 relay wins at states

New Kent’s boys track team can stake its claim to at least one state championship. Team members Coy Robinson, Chris Rolince, Tanner Smith, and Austin Savage joined forces and ran a time of 8:01.05 in the 3200 meter relay, claiming first in the event at the Group AA state track and field championships at Harrisonburg High School during the two-day meet last Friday and Saturday. All season, New Kent hitters have wreaked havoc with opposition pitching and been a key factor in the Trojans’ run to a share of the Bay Rivers District baseball regular season title. But a pair of Warhill pitchers silenced Trojan bats as the two teams that finished atop the standings faced off for the district’s tournament championship. New Kent’s Lady Trojans also claimed second seed status, topping Tabb’s Tigers 2-1 at York on May 25 in a playoff to determine Bay Rivers’ number two softball team. The win enabled New Kent to host a Region I opening game while Tabb was forced to go on the road. Cruising along with a 3-0 lead, New Kent’s Trojans added two more runs in the sixth inning at the expense of Poquoson’s Islanders — insurance runs since Poquoson had just one time at bat remaining in the top of the seventh and final frame. But those last two runs proved to be crucial. The Islanders scored three times in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate before the Trojans extinguished the comeback. Matt Metheny fired a two-hit shutout to propel New Kent’s Trojans into the semifinals of the Bay Rivers District baseball tournament with a 5-0 victory over Smithfield’s visiting Packers.
