Six Trojans named to All-Bay Rivers baseball first team
Seven New Kent players from the Trojans’ district co-championship baseball team have been chosen as All-Bay Rivers District performers, including six named to the first team. Catcher Nick Valentino, second baseman Jake Countiss, shortstop Mason Downer, center fielder Dakota Oxendine, pitcher Matt Metheny, and designated hitter Kevin Karaffa have been named to the first team while outfielder Dylan Walton is a second team selection. Lady Panther defense leads to doubling up Franklin
Lately, Charles City’s Lady Panthers have found alternative methods to put victories in the win column. A matchup against the visiting Franklin’s Lady Broncos on May 10 proved to be another one. Defensive pressure from the hosts coupled with two consecutive shutout innings enabled the Lady Panthers to double up on the Lady Broncos 20-10 in the Tri-Rivers District five-inning affair. New Kent falls just short of gaining second district win
Seven goals registered on the scoreboard in the first 13 minutes highlighted New Kent’s Bay Rivers District home soccer finale with Bruton’s Panthers. But the scoring pace dropped off dramatically thereafter. Unfortunately for the hosts, the Panthers held a 4-3 advantage after the early smoke cleared and held on to that one goal margin, escaping with a 5-4 win. Trojan teams 5th in Bay Rivers track
Both New Kent’s boys and girls track teams placed fifth overall in the Bay Rivers District track meet held May 13 at York. The boys recorded New Kent’s lone event win of the day, taking the 4×400 meter relay in 3:27.44. The Trojans scored 52.5 points. Lafayette won with 146.5. Despite Daron Jones being named most outstanding performer at the meet, Charles City’s Panthers fell short of claiming the team title on May 14 at the Tri-Rivers District Championships. Charles City accumulated 114 points to finish as runner-up to Sussex Central’s 133 points. Franklin’s 101, Windsor’s 54, Surry County’s 35, and Chesterfield Community’s 26 rounded out the scoring. Behind pitcher Sydney Gay’s 20 strikeouts and a controversial tiebreaker softball rule that played in the Packers’ favor, Smithfield posted a 1-0 win in nine innings to take over sole possession of first. Charles City’s Daron Jones won four events while teammate Cruz Adkins was a double event winner as the Panthers scored 93 points to close out their regular season with a first place finish at last Tuesday’s Tri-Rivers district track meet at Charles City.
