Winning 8-4, New Kent’s Trojans managed to sweep the season series with Bay Rivers District foe Tabb, but not without an unintentional assist from the Tiger coaching staff. Harris selected to all-state basketball

Antonio Harris has received honorable mention on the Virginia High School Coaches’ Association Group A basketball team. Harris, a junior at Charles City High School, received the honor on March 8. He averaged 25 points per game for the Panthers leading them to a district runner-up and regional tournament appearance. He was also a first team member of the Tri-Rivers District and a second team all-region selection, as well as eclipsing the 1,000 point scoring barrier this year. He is the son of Tony and Regina Harris.

Lady Panthers outlast Surry, remain in first

Rallying from a nine-run deficit, Charles City’s Lady Panthers used productive third and fifth innings to pull away from Tri-Rivers foe Surry County in a 20-17 shootout during last Friday’s softball contest to remain undefeated in district play. Trailing 10-1 heading into the bottom of the second, Mary Adkins’ single allowed Meryah Bates to score. Adkins, along with two other Lady Panthers, crossed the plate to cut the deficit in half (10-5). Lady Panther head coach Lauren Wood elected to switch pitchers at the top of the third. Surry pulls away from CC in late innings

Charles City’s Panthers remained within striking distance as they trailed Surry County’s visiting Cougars 7-2 in the top of the sixth inning. But with three runs in the top of the frame along with eight more in the top of the seventh inning, the visitors turned a close contest into a rout on the way to an 18-4 win and keeping the Panthers winless during last Friday’s contest. A Senior Night celebration for New Kent’s Lady Trojans turned sour as first they lost a key player to injury and then they dropped a 2-1 decision to Smithfield’s invading Packers. The May 3 encounter marked the final home appearance for the Lady Trojans, but matters did not begin well for the hosts.
