Colonial Downs open Kentucky Derby Day for simulcasting

Colonial Downs’ New Kent racetrack is opening this Saturday (May 4, Kentucky Derby Day) for simulcasting starting at 10 a.m. The Jockey Club Dining Room opens at 12 noon. Reservations are $15 each and include a table/TV seat, a Churchill program, and an official Kentucky Derby souvenir glass. Call Guest Services at 966-7223, ext. 1032 to reserve a seat and table.

Bush hurls perfect game as Lady Trojans blank Rams

Marisa Bush pitched a perfect game, striking out 12 of the 15 batters she faced, as New Kent’s Lady Trojans rolled past Lafayette’s invading Rams 12-0 in Bay Rivers District softball. Bush’s defense could relax last Friday as Lady Trojan fielders only had to glove a pair of infield grounders and one outfield fly. New Kent blasts Lafayette, moves within game of first

With a 14-1 conquest of Lafayette’s Rams, one of three teams tied atop the Bay Rivers District baseball standings, New Kent’s Trojans have moved within one game of the league leaders. The Trojans unleashed an 11-hit attack, including five doubles, to back the three-hit pitching of Matt Metheny on the way to destroying the Rams in last Friday’s clash. Heading into their Bay Rivers District soccer match last Thursday with Jamestown’s Eagles, New Kent’s host Trojans had good reason to believe they could effectively challenge and possibly upset the defending Group AA state champions. Two nights before, the Trojans lost 3-1 at Tabb. Tabb, meanwhile, had defeated Jamestown earlier by the same score. Lady Trojans race past four district foes

Individual event wins from Adrienne Goodlet, Ashley Pierce, Caroline Meade, and Anna Mathis led the way as New Kent’s host Lady Trojans finished ahead of four Bay Rivers District foes in track on April 9. Goodlet won the 100 meters (13.12), Pierce captured long jump (15-1), Meade prevailed in shot (27-2), and Mathis claimed discus (81-4) as New Kent piled up 86 points. Warhill ended in second with 79 followed by Lafayette and Grafton each with 72 and York with 41. Lightning halts soccer match at 0-0

New Kent’s Trojans looked to sweep their soccer series with West Point last Friday night, but Mother Nature intervened. Lightning from a rapidly approaching line of thunderstorms halted play just 90 seconds into the second half. A 0-0 tie existed at stoppage, and that’s how the official result reads. New Kent’s record stands at 5-3-1. Former NK softball player in nationally televised game

Former New Kent Lady Trojan softball player Nikki Jones, class of 2010, will be on national television as the Norfolk State Spartans take on the Hampton Pirates. Jones, a junior, received a full scholarship in softball from Norfolk State. She plays the utility position, meaning she plays any position on the field as needed. Jones will lead the Spartans on ESPNU on Saturday, May 4. Game time is 2 p.m.
