Harris eclipses 1,000 as Charles City tops Franklin

Charles City’s Panthers entered Senior Night looking for a win against Franklin to assure a chance at a Tri-Rivers District basketball title. They not only won, but saw a milestone achieved as well. Junior forward Antonio Harris scored 31 points and eclipsed the 1,000 point barrier as the hosts rolled to a 71-47 win over the visiting Broncos. New Kent’s Lady Trojans shut out West Point’s visiting Pointers in the first quarter on the way to a 41-20 non-district basketball triumph. The Lady Trojans led 10-0 after one period in the Feb. 2 affair and held a 19-7 advantage at the half. West Point reduced the deficit to 10 in the third quarter and trailed 25-14 heading into the final period. For New Kent’s Trojans, their 78-59 conquest of York’s visiting Falcons fell into the solid win category. NK boys 4th, girls 6th in indoor track

New Kent boys finished fourth while the girls placed sixth in the Bay Rivers District indoor track meet. The Trojan boys scored 51 points while the Lady Trojans amassed 34 points during the Feb. 4 meet. Lafayette’s boys and Tabb’s girls claimed the district titles with 164.5 and 99 points, respectively. Coy Robinson was the lone individual event winner for the Trojans, garnishing a mark of 21’4” in long jump. New Kent’s 4×400 relay team ran a time of 3:35.51, claiming the event. Post-season honors flow Allen’s way

Karley Allen’s volleyball career at New Kent High School has been capped off with her being named to the East squad for this summer’s Virginia High School Coaches Association all-star game and to the second team on the 2012 VHSCA All-State team. Allen has been named All-State for the second consecutive year. She was voted Region I and Bay Rivers District player of the year for 2012. Against Poquoson’s reserves, New Kent’s Lady Trojans had their way, outscoring their Islander guests 39-19 over two quarters of play.
