Unfortunately, the first few minutes of the third quarter became a repeat of their last performance on Surry’s floor. In the first two meetings between the third-seeded Chesterfield Community Eagles and the second-seeded Charles City Panthers, the team that opened a big lead in the first quarter won the game. It was no different in the Tri-Rivers District tournament semifinals. The Panthers jumped out on a 9-0 run and never trailed as they hung on for a 59-50 victory to advance to the tourney finals. Déjà vu is the sensation of doing something that you’ve done before. For Charles City’s Panthers, it seems that feeling is all too familiar. The second-seeded Panthers found themselves overwhelmed by a more energized and motivate top-seeded Surry Cougar team, as they fell 80-63 in the finals of the Tri-Rivers District Tournament on Feb. 16 at Surry. Charles City’s season ends in Region A quarterfinals

It’s hard to defeat an opponent three times in a season, albeit a district foe. But Charles City’s Panthers not only had to face Chesterfield Community’s Eagles for a fourth time (twice within a week), but Murphy’s Law on if something can go wrong, it probably will was in full effect. CC, NK players named all-district in basketball

Three Charles City athletes have been named to the All-Tri-Rivers District first team in basketball. Cheyenne Davis garnered first team honors for the Charles City Lady Panthers. Teammate Adrienne Miles was a second team selection while teammates Jessica Hill, Sara Whitehead, and Hailey Holmes received honorable mention. On the boys’ side, Avery Jones and Antonio Harris were named as first team selections. Honorable mention nods went to teammates Daron Jones, Jovan Howard, and Gavin Cotman. New Kent’s Bay Rivers District champion wrestling team finished second in the Region I meet and placed fourth overall at the Group AA state meet. Blake Hohman (126), Corey Todd (132), and B.C. LaPrade (138) won championships at the Region I meet held Feb. 9 at King George. Wilson Gregory (220) placed second while Bryson Mitchell (113) and Brett Flora (152) took third. Jackson Gray (106) and Devin Gouldine (170) finished fourth. Flora, meanwhile, excelled at the Feb. 16 Group AA state meet in Salem by finishing as the runner-up at 152 pounds. Several New Kent indoor track and field athletes qualified for the state Group AA indoor track and field championships held Feb. 23 at Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg. For the girls, Goodlet qualified in two events, running 7.67 in the 55 meter dash to place fourth, and 43.13 in the 300 meter dash for third. Teammates Daysa Jones and Taylor Stevens finished third and sixth in the pole vault with heights of nine feet and eight feet, respectively.
