In most basketball games, a team will usually put together one massive run to pull away from an opponent or to narrow a gap. In the case of the Charles City Panthers, they prefer their runs in multiples. The homestanding Panthers put together several double digit scoring streaks as they routed the visiting Appomattox Regional Governor School Dragons 86-35 in a Jan. 8 Tri-Rivers District contest. In a preseason poll, Charles City’s Lady Panthers and the visiting Appomattox Regional Governor’s School’s Lady Dragons were rated the top two teams in Tri-Rivers District basketball. But in their Jan. 8 match-up, the guests showed why they are the number nine ranked team in state Group A. The Lady Dragons (11-2 overall, 4-0 Tri-Rivers) put on a defensive clinic, holding the Lady Panthers (8-3, 2-2) to eight first half points en route to a 46-23 victory and maintaining a stranglehold on the district lead. Clippers run away from Lady Trojans
Grafton’s Lady Clippers cruised into New Kent’s gym with an unbeaten record and first place in Bay Rivers District basketball firmly in hand. A rivalry basketball game — notably Charles City versus New Kent — is special. Even though nothing is on the line district standings-wise, both teams leave everything on the floor in a quest for bragging rights. And the first installment of this season’s annual home-away series failed to disappoint. Horrible shooting from the floor by both teams highlighted the Dec. 17 non-distrcit basketball contest between the visiting New Kent Lady Trojans and the home-standing Charles City Lady Panthers.
