Trojans collapse in final minutes, Eagles escape
With just under six minutes to go in the game, New Kent’s Trojans trailed Jamestown’s visiting Eagles 51-50. After a dismal 0-5 start, that elusive first win of the season seemed well in reach for the host Trojans. Charles City’s Lady Panthers put together a variety of small runs to pull away from the visiting Sussex Central Lady Tigers. But the Tiger back court duo of Lacoura Ellis and Tiasha Hill overcame each scoring outburst by the hosts. Hill scored the first five points and Ellis scored the final 10 points as the visiting Tigers defeated the home-standing Lady Panthers 49-46 in the Dec. 11 Tri-Rivers District basketball opener for both. Overcoming poor shooting that featured a 13-minute field goal drought and a single second quarter basket, Charles City’s Lady Panthers rallied from a five-point second half deficit to overtake West Point’s visiting Lady Pointers 38-33. Charles City jumped out early in the Nov. 30 non-district basketball contest to lead 5-0 on baskets from Jessica Hill and Hailey Holmes.
