NK Gymnastics offers competitive cheering

New Kent Gymnastics Center is debuting a competitive cheer program for ages tots through high school. The Virginia Gems will begin open practices in December with tryouts scheduled in May. Once teams are established, competition will start in fall 2013. NKGC’s Virginia Gems will compete against other club teams in the state and beyond. Competitive cheerleading is quickly growing in popularity across the country with routines full of tumbling, stunting, dance and jumps. Theme contest on for inaugural Dogwood Classic

Now that “Dogwood Classic” has been decided as the name of the new steeplechase racing and tailgating event at Colonial Downs next April 6 and vehicle rail spaces are being sold at www.dogwoodclassic.com, a theme for the inaugural running is needed. Tailgating rail spaces for Dogwood Classic now on sale

Tailgating rail spaces for the inaugural running of the Dogwood Classic races at Colonial Downs are now on sale at a discount price through Jan. 31. The Dogwood Classic, an afternoon of steeplechase races and tailgating, is Saturday, April 6 over the Secretariat Turf Course. Tailgating will take place around the entire 1¼ mile outer track. Reserved vehicle tailgating spots in three different price levels will be available at an early bird 25 percent discount now through Jan. 31. NK 3 Courtland 2 Going the five-set limit, New Kent’s Lady Trojans stunned Courtland’s host Cougars, the Battlefield District champion, to advance to the Region I volleyball title game. More importantly, the victory qualified New Kent (22-6) for a berth in this week’s Group AA state tournament. NK 3 Poquoson 0 New Kent’s third-seeded Lady Trojans and Poquoson’s visiting and sixth-seeded Islanders came into their Oct. 30 Bay Rivers District volleyball tournament quarterfinal knowing each other very well since their two regular season matches went the five-set limit. New Kent had prevailed in both, but would this game be any different? Not in the outcome. Ball control Blues frustrate Charles City in playoffs

Charles City’s Panthers aimed for their first football playoff win since 1998, but in order to achieve that feat they would have to slow down Parry McCluer’s Fighting Blues and their talented running back Ryheem Dawson. Unfortunately, neither came to pass. Dawson accumulated 188 rushing yards and two touchdowns as Parry McCluer (7-4) ended Charles City’s (5-6) season last Friday in Buena Vista. Even with an inferior opponent taking the field against Charles City for a Nov. 2 non-district football contest, Panther coach Steward Greene questioned the preparedness of his team after only one day of full practice due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. His team, however, had the answers. Three second half Bruton touchdowns wiped out a New Kent halftime lead, propelling the visiting Panthers to a 21-6 Bay Rivers District football win, thus denying the Trojans a victory for the season.
