NK golf team posts success
New Kent High School’s golf team finished third in Bay Rivers District to automatically qualify for the Region I golf tournament. The Trojans finished sixth in the region while shooting their best team score of the year. The team was led by upperclassmen Caleb Baldwin, Sarah Baldwin, Ben Harrison, and Travis Frazier. Caleb, Sarah, and Ben also served as team captains. Other team members are Cole Hitchcock, Will Johnson, Bryce Paige, Jordan Peck, Austin Pierce, and Parker Wallace. Savage 21st in AA state cross country
New Kent’s Austin Savage finished 21st overall and 13th in scoring as the New Kent’s cross country team finished in 14th in last Saturday’s Group AA cross country championships. Savage finished in 16:29 over the 3.1-mile Great Meadow course near Warrenton. Other scorers for the Trojans were Andrew Carlin (56th, 17:22), Tyler Brightwell (83rd, 17:59), Tanner Smith (94th, 18:16), and Christopher Rolince (101st, 18:37). Also running for the Trojans were Ben Johnston (102nd, 18:37) and Micah Scorsone (104th, 18:39). New Kent scored 347 points.

Several New Kent and Charles City athletes have earned all-district status at the conclusion of the fall sports season. New Kent senior middle blocker/outside hitter Karley Allen is not only a first team Region I selection, but has been named Region I Player of the year. She is also a member of the All-Bay Rivers District team in volleyball, as well as the district’s player of the year. Savage leads New Kent cross country to states
Austin Savage ran 17:00.2 and finished sixth overall as the New Kent Trojans team finished in fourth at the Region I Cross Country meet to qualify for the Group AA cross country track and field championships. New Kent grabbed the last team qualifying spot with 118 points. They finished behind Bay Rivers District counterparts Lafayette (35) and Jamestown (74) who finished first and second respectively. Courtland edged out the Trojans for the third spot with 112 points. Panthers secure homecoming triumph over Surry, 29-14
Offensively, Charles City’s Panthers didn’t provide dazzling numbers last Friday during its homecoming football game. They didn’t have to. Powered all night by superb defense and great field position, the host Panthers (4-5 overall, 2-2 Tri-Rivers) triumphed over the visiting Surry County Cougars (3-6, 0-3) 29-14 in their final game as a member of the Tri-Rivers District. Charles City wasted little time making its impact on defense. Lady Trojans turn back York challenge
New Kent’s Lady Trojans came into their Bay River District volleyball match with York knowing they needed to keep winning to secure a number two seed in the upcoming district tournament. And they were in a battle with the fourth-ranked Falcons until the end. After dropping a hotly contested first set, the hosts bounced back to sweep the next three in the Oct. 16 match and strengthen their grasp on second place. Led by Austin Savage’s second place overall finish, New Kent’s Trojans qualified for this week’s Region I cross country meet by capturing third at last Thursday’s Bay Rivers District meet. Savage ran 16:26.6 over William & Mary’s 3.1-mile course, falling just short in a final kick to overtake the meet’s overall winner, Lafayette’s Jason Menzies. Mistakes continue to thwart New Kent football win bid
A scenario where New Kent’s Trojans are matching their opposition through one half but then disaster strikes after the break has played out on more than one occasion this football season. The Trojans’ Oct. 19 homecoming encounter with Poquoson’s Islanders can also be added to the mix. Trailing 27-20 early in the third quarter and driving for an apparent tying touchdown, the Trojans reached the Islander nine-yard line where they faced fourth down and six yards to go. Charles City Panthers’ defense held its own at Group A fourth-ranked Sussex Central. Unfortunately, the offense vacated the field during the contest against the Tigers. Charles City (3-4, 1-2 Tri-Rivers) turned the ball over five times and failed to convert four Sussex Central (8-0, 2-0) turnovers into scores as the host Tigers earned a 36-0 victory during the Oct. 19 contest. Senior Night at New Kent will be remembered for the host Lady Trojans’ volleyball dominance of Bay Rivers District opponent Smithfield (2-14).
