Inaugural Sarah’s Memorial golf tourney deemed success

The first annual Sarah’s Memorial Golf Tournament was held at the Club at Viniterra golf course on Sept. 13 and was an overwhelming success. The program exceeded all expectations by depositing $24,000 into a scholarship endowment with the College of William and Mary Foundation in the memory of Sarah Lindsey Gupta. Sarah passed away in November 2011 with a rare form of adrenal cancer. She was a former teacher at New Kent Middle School, a graduate of New Kent High School, and an alumnus of the College of William and Mary. The goal of the endowment is to offer scholarships…

New Kent High School stadium renamed in honor of former athletic director Ed Allen Jr.

New Kent High School’s football stadium is now the Ed Allen Jr. Sports Complex after school officials from the past and present dedicated the facility Friday night in honor of the recently retired athletics director and coach during pre-game festivities at the Trojans’ homecoming celebration. Allen spent his entire 42-year career in education at New Kent.

When Charles City’s Avery Jones responded with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after the Group A number three ranked Franklin Broncos opened the game with a similar return, Panthers head coach Steward Greene thought his team came for a showdown. Unfortunately, the showdown became a no show for the Panthers (3-4, 1-1 Tri-Rivers) as the visiting Broncos (7-0, 2-0) backed up their high ranking with a 30-point first quarter on their way to a 51-12 victory in Tri-Rivers District football last Friday. During the week heading into his team’s football clash with Jamestown’s Eagles, New Kent coach Dan Rounds said considerable time was spent responding to adverse situations that are the nature of the game. New Kent’s Lady Trojans may have lost a one-sided field hockey contest to Bay Rivers District foe Poquoson, but the hosts managed something they have done in only one previous district contest — they scored. Not once, but twice. Austin Savage raced past Peninsula Catholic’s Phillip Harpen in the final stretch to place first individually and help New Kent post cross-country victories over two non-district opponents. Savage crossed the finish line on New Kent’s 3.1-mile course in 17:24, one second ahead of Harpen in the Oct. 3 meet. New Kent scored 23 points to Peninsula Catholic’s 36. Short-handed Trojans drop 7th straight at York, 28-0

With five starters, including a trio of two-way performers sidelined by injuries, New Kent’s winless Trojans faced an uphill climb in taking on York’s Falcons, one of three teams tied atop the Bay Rivers District football standings. And the Falcon defense made sure the visiting Trojans never reached the pinnacle of a major upset. Charles City overcomes 2nd half woes, trounces Windsor

At the beginning of the season, Charles City head coach Steward Greene spoke about how traditionally his football team comes out flat after halftime. He’s glad his team decided to break the tradition. The Panthers (3-3) scored on each of their three possessions in the third quarter in routing the Windsor Dukes (2-4) 38-14 in an Oct. 5 Tri-Rivers District contest.
