By Robb Johnson Chronicle Intern New Kent’s Lady Trojans came into their Oct. 9 Bay Rivers District volleyball match with Tabb’s visiting Tigers knowing they were the better team. The game was very competitive in the first set, but then the hosts showed in the next two sets which was the more talented and dominant team. Lady Trojans fall to WCA in sudden death overtime, 2-1
In search of their fourth field hockey win in five tries against non-district competition, New Kent’s Lady Trojans battled Williamsburg Christian Academy’s Eagles to a 1-1 standoff in regulation. Early in sudden death overtime, however, the Eagles punched in the deciding shot to escape with a 2-1 triumph. Charles City edges Middlesex in overtime thriller, 34-32
When Charles City’s Panthers turned the ball over twice and fell behind by double digits early on, it was a familiar place they have been in all year. This time, however, the Panthers found a different spot at the conclusion of the game. Rallying from 14 points down to the host Middlesex Chargers in the late stages of the third quarter, the Panthers received crucial touchdown runs from quarterback Jovan Howard and forced overtime where they emerged victorious 34-32. Mistakes have governed New Kent’s fate through what has so far this season been a winless excursion in Bay Rivers District football. That pattern remained intact as the Trojans took on Tabb’s host Tigers last Friday night. Warhill kickoff return cuts short New Kent comeback
If Warhill’s Devonte Dedmon had missed the bus for the trip to New Kent, it would have suited the host Trojans just fine. Unfortunately for the Trojans, the Lions’ all-everything performer showed up. Dedmon ran for 165 yards and a touchdown, caught passes for 68 more plus a touchdown, and threw for another 42 as well as a TD. It had been a month since the Charles City Panthers football team played on its own field. They didn’t disappoint the home crowd. Despite a 15-minute pregame delay and a slight drizzle towards the end of the game, the Panthers (2-3) poured on the points on their way to a 30-0 shutout of the visiting Northumberland Indians (1-4). Overcoming a sluggish start against the bottom dweller in the Bay Rivers District volleyball standings, New Kent’s Lady Trojans assumed dominance the rest of the way for a three-set sweep, 25-19, 25-10, 25-9. The Sept. 25 victory over Bruton’s Panthers kept the hosts in second place, one game in the loss column behind unbeaten Jamestown. New Kent improved to 8-1 in the district and 11-3 overall. With an easier than expected triumph over Lafayette’s invading Rams, New Kent’s Lady Trojans strengthened their grip on second place in Bay Rivers volleyball by virtue of a three-set sweep. New Kent topped the Rams 25-16, 25-9, 25-10 to improve to 9-1 in the district and 12-3 overall. Although the offense never got off a shot, the Lady Trojans’ defense surrendered just two goals. New Kent Falcons’ varsity midget team (age 11-12) defeated the previously unbeaten East End Tigers 19-16 in a thrilling come from behind football victory last Saturday at Falcon Field. The game started as a defensive struggle as both teams’ high-powered offenses failed to put the ball in the end zone in the first half. After stopping the Tigers on their first possession of the second half, the Falcons mounted a drive finished off by Zach Morris’ 4-yard TD run with 3:22 left in the third quarter.
