Charles City Lady Panthers’ volleyball wins first game in six years, sweeps Carver Academy in straight sets

Sometimes success comes from patience and persevering through adversity and tough challenges. When the opportunity arrived for Charles City’s Lady Panthers in a Sept. 13 volleyball contest, they pounced their way to the winning side of the scoreboard. Charles City swept the visiting Carver Lady Wolverines 25-11, 25-18, 25-9 to win its first volleyball contest of the season. The win is also the school’s first win in the sport since 2016, with the last one coming against George Wythe on Oct. 10, 2016. Colonial Downs success this season resulted in record-breaking financial numbers for the Colonial Downs Group under the ownership of Peninsula Pacific Entertainment. Despite losing one day due to weather conditions, the group accumulated $74,940,840 in total bets for the 2022 racing season. Charles City’s return to gridiron marred after on-field scuffle with Northumberland

What was supposed to be a celebration for the return of football at Charles City High School after a three-year hiatus quickly became marred after an on-field scuffle brought the game to an early end. Charles City’s Panthers fell to the visiting Northumberland Indians 34-6 during Friday night’s contest. Charles City had no qualms about taking on a much more experienced team. New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ volleyball team is hoping their experience catches up with their talent level. A Sept. 8 contest against the visiting Smithfield Lady Packers showed what could be a bright future for the youthful squad. Behind 11 kills from senior Aubrey Hyndshaw, New Kent swept Smithfield 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 in straight sets in the Bay Rivers District contest. In the first set, both teams played evenly as neither side could gain an advantage. And if Tuesday night’s game against perennial Tidewater District Mathews County showed, the team may notch a few wins before the end of the season. After a disappointing outcome that resulted on missing the playoffs, New Kent’s football team looked to make amends in their home opener Friday night as they hosted the Colonial Heights’ Colonials. Despite jumping out to a massive lead, New Kent had to hold on as they withstood a comeback from the visitors in a 21-14 win inside of the Ed Allen Jr. Athletic Complex. New Kent Lady Trojans’ field hockey team scored first and never looked back as they toppled the visiting Hopewell Blue Devils 3-0 in the Sept. 1 home opener. After a scoreless first quarter, New Kent would put a point on the board after Katie Fly converted a penalty corner for a 1-0 lead. Hopewell attempted to make the Lady Trojans’ defense work, but the hosts continued to play disciplined to prevent shot attempts.
