Fast start by Smithfield overwhelms Lady Trojans on pitch

A fast start and a dominant first half by the visiting Smithfield Lady Packers proved to be too much for the hosting New Kent Lady Trojans to handle. Behind a hat trick from Katie Lutz, Smithfield scored four first half goals en route to a 5-0 victory over New Kent Monday evening. Smithfield’s pressure defense rattled the Lady Trojans from the onset. Lutz would take advantage as she scored the first three goals of the game for the visitors. In battle of state champions, Hanover overpowers New Kent 3-0

Sometimes in sports, a match-up can speak for itself. Such was the case when defending Group 3A champion New Kent Lady Trojans visited the defending Group 4A state champion in the Hanover Lady Hawks. In the end, it was a triumph for the hosting Lady Hawks. Hanover orchestrated a shutout of New Kent, emerging in the 3-0 non-district victory Monday evening. Charles City Panther teams earn eighth, ninth place finishes at home meet

Charles City High School’s boys’ track and field team finished in eighth place at the Apr. 13 regular home season meet. Ashton English was the top scorer for the Panthers, earning a third place finish in the shot put with a toss of 38’10”. Charles City scored 11 points in the competition. Middlesex captured the boys’ portion of the competition with 148.5 points. On the girls’ side, Charles City scored 12 points to earn a ninth-place finish in the meet. A fast start by the visiting York Falcons placed New Kent’s Trojans in a hole they never could recover from. York scored two early goals in the first half as they defeated New Kent 3-1 in Tuesday evening soccer action. The Trojans’ defense broke down early, with the visiting Falcons taking advantage. Goals by Hayden Middleton and Tyler Quick helped the visitors forge a 2-0 lead, one that would hold through halftime. Even though Charles City’s Lady Panthers softball team record showed a win, it was by forfeit. That number increased with on-field work Tuesday afternoon. After a back-and-forth battle, Charles City would score eight runs in the final three innings to defeat the visiting King & Queen Lady Tigers 14-10 in Tidewater District action. A fresh recharge seemed to be the solution for Charles City High School’s baseball team as they searched for their first win of the year. But it didn’t easy.
