Young New Kent Lady Trojans’ volleyball squad drops home opener to Bruton

New Kent’s Lady Trojans have enjoyed success over the last few years thanks to strong, experienced classes. But with a team that lost eight to graduation plus new head coach Stuart Burnett receiving his opportunity at the helm, the learning experiences are going to be plentiful. Such was the case in Tuesday night’s home opener for the Lady Trojans. Despite a comeback that saw New Kent battle back from being down two sets, the visiting Bruton Lady Panthers defeated New Kent in five sets (23-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-14, 13-15) in the opening Bay Rivers District contest for both teams. Charles City High School volleyball returns to court, falls in straight sets to Lancaster

Charles City High School’s Lady Panthers’ volleyball team last participated in Fall sports in 2019, the season prior to the global pandemic. A triumphant return on Aug. 24 looked to reignite the program to make it a mainstay. But a stiff challenge greeted Charles City as the visiting Lancaster Lady Red Devils, who were state quarterfinalists last year, didn’t let the fanfare last too long for the hosts. Charles City High School Fall sports return after a three-year absence

After a three-year absence, Charles City County High School will field Fall sports for the 2022-23 season. Charles City High School Athletic Director Andre’ Jones issued a press release on Aug. 5 regarding the positive news for a community that hasn’t’ seen football or girls’ volleyball since 2019. “This has probably been some of the best news we have had in a long time,” Jones said in the press release. “When you see student-athletes who want to revive a program, they will rally others and unite together in an effort to make that happen.” The press release added that the…

Colonial Downs race season kicks off July 11

Live horse racing will return to Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent beginning Monday, July 11. Top Thoroughbred horses will run every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with post time slated for 1:45 p.m. The 2022 season will be highlighted by the $300,000 Virginia Derby that will be run on Tuesday, Sept. 6, on the Secretariat Turf Course. Miles selected as Region 4B soccer Coach of the Year

Willie Miles, a 2012 graduate of New Kent High School, was selected as Virginia’s Region 4B soccer coach of the year. Miles, who is the head coach at Powhatan High School, led the team to a 17-4-1 record on the year and guided the team to its first state tournament appearance.

Mueller named Group 3A state softball Player of the Year; Bates gets nod as Coach of the Year

Recent New Kent High School graduate McKenna Mueller has been named the Group 3A State Softball Player of the Year. Mueller batted .488 with 42 hits, 32 RBIs, and crossed home plate 40 times. Of her hits, eight were doubles, three were triples, and three were home runs. Mueller, as the state player of the year, was named to the VHSL Group 3A State first team. Three of her teammates also received the accolade as members of the first team. New Kent’s Jack Swynford has been selected as a member of the Group 3A State second team in baseball. Swynford was selected as an outfielder on the squad in a press release released Tuesday morning by the Virginia High School League.

Charles City’s Coney finishes tenth in girls’ triple jump at state championship meet

Charles City’s Nevaeh Coney finished tenth in the girls’ triple jump at the Group 1A Outdoor State Track and Field Championships held June 3-4 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Coney leaped 32’0” in the competition to earn her position in the top ten. She ran a season best 1:08.03 in the girls’ 400-meter dash to finish 15th, and placed 20th in the girls’ long jump with a distance of 13’4”.
