Charles City brings 27-game baseball skid to an end, beats King & Queen 8-7

Charles City’s Panthers are fielding one of their biggest baseball rosters in years as 18 players are up to the task for restoring the program’s success. While most of those players are first-year varsity athletes, snapping a 27-game losing skid on Apr. 15 is a step in the right direction. Charles City edged the visiting King & Queen Tigers 8-7 in the Tidewater District opening contest for both teams. Several New Kent High School athletes receive all-state recognition in Winter sports

Several New Kent High School athletes garnered all-state recognition for their participation during the 2024-25 Winter sports season. In wrestling, Noah Cuic (138-pound division) and Tristan Carter (120-pound division) were all-state selections. Ryan Griffith received the nod in the all-around division in gymnastics. Finn Leggett was recognized for his performance in the 100-meter freestyle in swimming, and Will Ross was selected to the Class 3A All-State second team in boys’ basketball.

New Kent alum Christian returns to states to coach Bryant University

A New Kent native is returning to coaching on the collegiate circuit after coaching overseas for the last two years. Jamion Christian, a 2000 graduate of New Kent High School, has been named as the new head coach of Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island, following a Friday morning press conference. Christian has spent the last two years coaching Pallacanestro Trieste in the Italian Professional League. In his first year there, he led his team to the Lega Nazionale Pallanestro championship, resulting in the team’s promotion to the top Italian League. Such was the case Tuesday afternoon during the finale of a three-game Spring Break showcase. New Kent crushed the Glen Allen Jaguars 12-2 in the final game of the Deep Run Tournament, finishing the series with a 2-1 record. New Kent’s Lady Trojans strung together an 88-point performance to finish in third at their home “Shoot the Gun and Run Invitational” held Saturday.
