New Kent bats explode as Trojans rout Bruton in baseball home opener

After an exit from the regional playoffs that was earlier than expected, New Kent’s baseball team focus is now on rectifying that mistake with a fresh start in the 2023 campaign. A Mar. 15 contest against the visiting Bruton Panthers couldn’t have asked for a much better kickoff. New Kent cruised to a 17-0 victory over Bruton in the Bay Rivers District opener for both teams. A new year means a fresh start on the pitch for New Kent’s boys’ soccer team. And a fresh start means kicking the season off with a win. Check and check. New Kent’s early scores in the opening half were enough for a 3-1 victory over the visiting Colonial Heights’ Colonials during the Mar. 14 matchup. Washington runs personal best at Group 1A/2A Indoor State Track & Field Championships

Charles City’s Janiya Washington ran a personal best of 44.76 in the girls’ 300-meter dash at the Group 1A/2A Indoor State Track & Field championships held Mar. 1-2 at Liberty University. Washington, the only participant for Charles City, placed 11th overall in the event.

Branch earns bronze in boys’ triple jump at Group 3A State Indoor Track and Field Championships

New Kent County boys’ indoor track and field team accumulated 12 points, finishing 21st at the Group 3A Indoor State Track & Field championships held Feb. 27-28 at Liberty University. Ellis Branch was able to earn a spot on the podium in the triple jump competition. His leap of 42’9” garnered him a third place finish. He also earned another point by finishing eighth in the 300-meter dash with a time of 36.24. Ryan Wright accounted for the other points for the Trojans. Petersburg sizes up New Kent, squash Trojans to end New Kent’s season

A Feb. 22 quarterfinal matchup in Petersburg saw the visiting New Kent Trojans facing a Crimson Wave team that had a size advantage over the visitors. And while the Trojans did their best early on to keep their distance from the hosts, it was Petersburg’s second quarter swing that closed the chapter on New Kent’s boys’ basketball season. Petersburg trounced New Kent 89-70 in the Group 3A Region A quarterfinal contest, thus ending the Trojans season with a record of 17-10. That number rose to three Monday night. Behind a 29-point effort from Kyle Diggs, New Kent powered to a 63-45 victory over the Tigers, positioning them in the quarterfinals to take on the fourth-seeded Petersburg Crimson Wave on Feb. 22. During Charles City’s regular season encounter with the Northampton Yellow Jackets, the Panthers found themselves shocked by the speed of the guards and the present of 6’8” center Braden Justice. But in the Feb. 20 1A Region A quarterfinal matchup, the Panthers were much more prepared to handle the atmosphere.
