New Kent’s boys amassed 80 points, good enough for third at the Group 3A indoor state track and field championships held Feb. 17-18 at the Boo Williams Complex in Hampton. Ellis Branch’s leap of 44’2” propelled him to the top spot in the triple jump competition, winning by more than two feet. New Kent High School’s Wrestling Team saw its four-year Group 3A State Title win streak come to an end Saturday night. But the group still brought home hardware. The Trojans totaled 155 points at the state championship meet, finishing as the runner-up in the competition. New Kent was dethroned by Staunton River, who scored 216.5 points. Gutierrez wins Group 3A state diving title

New Kent High School Aisling Gutierrez captured the state championship in the girls one-meter dive competition at the Group 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships held Feb. 16-17. Gutierrez amassed 487.40 points, easily outdistancing herself from her opponents to capture the victory. New Kent’s Lady Trojans scored 28 points in the event, finishing in 20th place at state championships. On the boys’ side, the Trojans accumulated 39 points, also good enough to finish 20th at the state competition. Charles City’s Janiya Washington ran a personal best of 45.65 in the girls’ 300-meter dash at the Group 1A/2A Region A Championship meet on Feb. 15 and automatically qualify for the state championship meet. A Friday night contest saw New Kent’s Trojans travel to take on the hosting Lafayette Ram for an opportunity to bring home a Bay Rivers District tournament trophy. But despite the fans coming out in droves to support the visitors, it was Lafayette who took away New Kent’s scoring options that ultimately factored into the final outcome. New Kent High School’s Wrestling Team clinched their sixth consecutive regional championship with a dominating performance Saturday on their own home floor. New Kent accumulated 305.5 points, more than double than runner-up Lafayette who finished with 127.5 points, to win the Group 3A Region A championship. District tournaments no longer have a significant impact for several regions in regard to postseason play and positioning. But don’t tell New Kent’s Trojans that. Lamprecht finishes second in two events at Bay Rivers indoor track and field championships

New Kent’s Isaac Lamprecht finished as runner-up in two events as the Trojans indoor track and field team placed seventh in the Bay Rivers District Championship meet held Feb. 3 at the Boo Williams Complex in Hampton. Lamprecht earned silver in the 1600-meter run (4:36.16) and 3200-meter run (9:37.84). Teammates Ryan Wright and Ellis Branch also earned silver medals, with Wright going 8.86 in the 55-meter hurdles, and Branch leaping 41’6” in the boys’ triple jump.
