Charles City juniors Janiya Washington and Nevaeh Coney each racked up a pair of runner-up spots during the Mar. 17 home track and field meet for the Panthers. Washington finished as runner-up in the girls’ 100-meter and 200-meter dash, posting times of 14.21 and 29.62, respectively. Coney earned a pair of silver medals in the girls’ 400-meter dash (1:10.42) and girls’ long jump (13’10”). The Lady Panthers accumulated 42 points, finishing fourth in the eight-team meet. Charles City High School’s Nevaeh Coney leaped to a personal best in the girls’ triple jump competition on her way to finishing seventh at the Group 1A/2A State Championship meet held Mar. 2-3 at Liberty University. Coney garnered a mark of 31’6” in the event, topping her previous best by more than two feet and scoring two points for the Lady Panthers. Her two points helped Charles City finish 28th at the meet, with Glenvar winning the girls’ championship. Coney was the only participant for Charles City in the championship meet.
Two former standout athletes of New Kent County High School have been selected as part of the Virginia High School League’s (VHSL) Class of 2022. Mia Pollard and Kiamesha Otey will both be inducted during a ceremony on Sunday, Apr. 24, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Charlottesville. Pollard was a stand-out athlete in both outdoor track and field and basketball. In 2018, New Kent’s Lady Trojans bounced the Lakeland Lady Cavaliers from the Region 3A playoffs. During the Mar. 1 rematch, it was a revitalized Lakeland program that prevented New Kent from claiming another regional title. After upsetting rival Tabb during a first-round regional playoff game, New Kent’s Trojans trekked southward to Park View of South Hill to face the Dragons in a quarterfinal clash. And despite a valiant effort that saw the visitors erase a 23-point deficit, it was the hosts ability to get to the free throw line that was key in their triumph. Churchill Downs Inc. has agreed to acquire Peninsula Pacific Entertainment LLC., the company that owns the aforementioned entities, for $2.485 billion.
