Charles City’s Panthers have faced setbacks for most of the season. From precautionary quarantines to winter weather postponements, Charles City’s team full of underclassmen had yet to find time to gel. Monday’s Tidewater District contest against the Middlesex Chargers was an example of what a more experienced team could do when they are continuously on the court. The visiting Chargers used their size and an overwhelming press to blitz past Charles City 87-22 in a matchup to keep the Panthers winless. After Middlesex’s big man Malachi Dandy scored the opening two baskets, Charles City’s Mitchell Whitehead banked a three-pointer to…

A team’s record can be deceiving in sports. And New Kent’s Trojans found that out the hard way heading into a Jan. 19 contest against the Warhill Lions. Despite only posting one win on the year, the visiting Lions outmuscled New Kent 64-57 in the Bay Rivers District match-up. New Kent’s defense had trouble early on in the game, as Lions’ wingman Jacobi Cherry drained a three-pointer. York jumped out front the opening tip, quickly orchestrating seven straight points for the early lead. From there, the Falcons began to capitalize off their physical stature. An Amari Gorham drive added two points before Milyan…

New Kent High School’s wrestling program accumulated wins Tuesday afternoon over Bay Rivers District foes York and Lafayette in the home tri-meet. New Kent outscored York 62-18 and Lafayette 53-12 to breeze to the win. “It was a great team effort,” said first-year Head Coach John Goodbody. “We have a lot of younger guys in the lineup which was kind of fun. This gave an opportunity for them to get into the lineup and kind of battle a little bit.” The Trojan coach elected to rest a few wrestlers who had grappled the previous weekend at the Walsh Jesuit High…
