Charles City’s Derequa Johnson ran a time of 16.00 to place second in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles at the Group 1A State Track and Field Championships held June 6-7 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Johnson ran a time of 15.74 in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles on Friday before grabbing the silver on Saturday. Basic baseball continues to get it done for the New Kent Trojans. Behind a shutout by Joshua Sorrell and three hits by Brody Cash, New Kent defeated the visiting Colonial Heights Colonials during the June 4 contest, advancing them to the regional finals and earning them a berth in the state tournament. Unfortunately for New Kent, that opportunity ended in heartbreak thanks to a district rival. Lauren Vick, a native of Quinton, is the recipient of the Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence. The award is given to a graduating senior of the Big South Conference who attained the highest GPA during their undergraduate careers. Vick, who participated in both cross-country and outdoor track and field at Longwood University, earned a grade-point average of 4.0, earning Big South All-Academic Team honors.
