Charles City girls second at Northumberland meet; boys place third

Charles City High Schools’ girls’ indoor track and field team concluded the regular season with a second-place finish at the Northumberland Polar Bear Meet on Feb. 17. On the girls’ side, lone Lady Panther Alexis Williams accumulated 18 points at the meet, finishing behind meet winner Mathews (26) and ahead of host Northumberland (15). Sixteen members of New Kent High School’s swim team will participate in the Group 3A state championships on Feb. 25 in Christiansburg. Athletes qualifying for the meet are Logan Adkins, Jack Shaffar, Jordan Owens, Blake Newton, Ian Durkee, Isaac Lamprecht, Cooper Harris, Gavin Wetherington, Sadie Call, Kiersten Fuller, Kaleigh Redman, Cora Kline, Kendal Vorous, Lauryn Paxton, Summer Wetherington, and Madison Gravely.

New Kent High School boys’ indoor track and field team claim regional title; Lady Trojans finish second

New Kent High School’s boys indoor track and field team accumulated 188 points en route to winning the Group 3A Region A indoor track and field championship. Isaac Barber emerged as a triple-event winner, posting wins in the boys’ 500-meter dash (1:12.84), long jump (19’11”), and triple jump (40’7¾”). Teammates Roy Kegley (55-meter hurdles-9.20), Ellis Branch (high jump-5’6”), Wade Grubbs (shot- 42’5¼”), and Markus Snydor (pole vault-10’0”) were also individual event winners. Charles City’s girls’ and boys’ indoor track teams emerged with victories at Northumberland’s Polar Bear meet Saturday morning. The lone Lady Panther, Alexis Williams, won six events to accumulate 30 points to single-handily defeat Mathews (26) and Northumberland (15). Williams won the girls’ long jump (15’10”), girls’ triple jump (33’6”), girls’ shot (20’6”), girls’ 55-meter hurdles (10.97), girls’ 55-meter dash (8.29), and girls’ 300-meter dash (52.84). For the last two weeks, New Kent’s Trojans varsity boys’ basketball team has been sitting out of action and practices due to COVID-19 protocols and procedures. It was befitting that their return to the court pitted them against rival Charles City County.
