Two NK hoopers named to Region 3A second team

Two New Kent High School boys’ basketball players were selected to the 3A Region A second team. Logan Frederick, a junior forward who averaged 13 points per game, and Calvin York, a junior guard who averaged 12 points per game, were named for the athletic accolades. Junior guard Jack Swynford, who averaged 12 points a game, was recognized as an Honorable Mention selection.

Controversial finish allows Warhill to escape New Kent with 13-7 victory

Friday night’s slugfest between the hosting New Kent Trojans and the visiting Warhill Lions provided the latest example of how every yard and second counts in football. But the controversial conclusion of the game provided an outcome that the home team questioned even after the final horn sounded. Charles City’s Williams, Smith capture Group 1A/2A state triple jump titles

It’s been more than 20 years since Charles City High School has been able to claim a state championship of any kind. On Mar. 3 at the VHSL Group 1A/2A Indoor Track and Field championships at Liberty University, they earned two in one day. Charles City senior Alexis Williams and male counterpart D’Angelo Smith both won the triple jump in their respective divisions during the championship meet. New Kent blasts Jamestown to win volleyball season opener

For several years, the Jamestown Lady Eagles have been a thorn to the New Kent Lady Trojans when it comes to volleyball matches. But in a Mar. 2 contest, it was the Lady Trojans who used a needled that popped Jamestown’s hopes of winning in the opening season contest. New Kent handily defeated Jamestown 25-14, 22-25, 25-14, 25-7 in the Bay Rivers contest, putting all other teams in the district on notice. New Kent boys’ indoor track finishes 10th in state competition

New Kent High School’s boys’ indoor track and field team finished 10th in the Group 3A State Track and Field championships held Mar. 2 at Liberty University. The boys’ team compiled 22 points to finish in the top ten. Monticello claimed the boys’ title with 57 points. Ellis Branch earned the bronze medal in the boys’ high jump with a clearance of 5’10”. Curry siblings place at Adidas National Indoor Track meet

A pair of New Kent siblings placed at the Adidas Indoor National Track Meet held Feb. 26-27 in Virginia Beach. Lauren Curry earned second place finishes in the middle school girls’ high jump (4’8”) and girls’ shot put (30’0”) competition. Her brother Jayden Curry placed fourth in the middle school boys’ high jump competition with a clearance of 5’2”.

Three Lady Trojans named to all-tournament team by coaches

Three New Kent Lady Trojans basketball team members have been selected to the Group 3A All-State Tournament team by a committee of coaches. McKenna Mueller was named to the first team, while teammates Darian Mason and Jaiden McCoy were selections to the second team. The group of coaches elected to make the selections as the Virginia High School League (VHSL) elected to forgo naming all-state teams for the FY2020-21 athletic year. The coaches’ choices were a way to recognize athletes for their accomplishments despite a season that contained many obstacles.

For the third consecutive year, New Kent High School’s Trojans wrestling team captured the Group 3A state championship Sunday evening at the Salem Civic Center.
