St. Peter’s Parish awards five scholarships to NKHS seniors

St. Peter’s Parish has recently awarded five scholarships to New Kent High School graduating seniors. Robert Best, David Bushhouse, Heath Hardiman, Clare Morris, and Austin Pierce, each received $1,000 scholarships courtesy of the Louise Miller Clopton and William Boyd Clopton Memorial Scholarship fund. The awards are given to students who demonstrate strong moral character, religious involvement, community service, motivation, and academic success. A committee chose the recipients, with committee chairman Bill O’Keefe saying each student demonstrated maturity and strong moral values.

Collie to attend U.S. Military Academy

Brandon Collie, a senior at Charles City High School and current commander of the school’s JROTC “Panther” Battalion, has been accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point as a member of the class of 2019. Collie earned the acceptance to the service academy after receiving a congressional nomination from the office of Congressman Bobby Scott. Blackwater Outdoors Inc., a landscaping company, has opened its doors in New Kent. Founded by Eric Whitlow, the business offers a variety of landscaping, including mulching, providing top soil, grass and seed treatment and more. Whitlow said that he started the business due to a growing demand for bulk landscaping and that its location in New Kent was convenient for customers. Whitlow has 15 years of landscaping and removal experience. The business is located at 5430 New Kent Highway.
