Two former local school superintendents have accepted interim superintendent positions pending completion of searches for permanent replacements in the respective localities. Dr. Robert Richardson has been named interim superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools. Richardson served as New Kent County Public Schools superintendent from 2007-2014 before retiring. Dr. Janet Crawley has been tabbed as interim superintendent of schools for Mecklenburg County Public Schools. Crawley served as Charles City County superintendent of schools from 1999-2014 before retiring from the post.
A New Kent man has died as the result of his injuries suffered in a June 20 crash in Chesterfield. Larry G. Washington II, 25, died at VCU medical center on June 25. A passenger, Shaniqua G. Brown, also died as a result of the accident. Washington and Brown were traveling near the 21000 block on Hull Street shortly after 8 p.m. when the vehicle veered from the road and struck a tree. Charles City Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a potential scam involving individuals posing as IRS agents. Citizens in the county recently have been receiving calls from individuals claiming to be IRS agents. The impostors are telling citizens that they owe on delinquent taxes to the federal government and are going to be arrested if they don’t pay over the phone. The IRS never contacts anyone concerning delinquent bills by telephone nor asks for payment by that method. An Independence Day 17.7 mile running race in Charles City will cause traffic delays and detours during the early morning hours. The July 4 race will begin and end at Shirley Plantation. The race will begin at the historical site, traveling down Shirley Plantation Road before making a left onto John Tyler Memorial Highway (Route 5). The decision on the construction of a stand-alone library in Charles City will come down to a November vote pending a final process approval through the circuit court. Charles City supervisors unanimously passed a resolution for the item to appear on the fall election ballot. A New Kent woman was killed during a Saturday night accident in Chesterfield. Shaniqua Brown, 23, died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on June 20. According to the police report, Brown was a passenger in a Mercury Mountaineer traveling westbound on Hull Street before the vehicle veered off the road, striking a tree. Brown was transported to a hospital where she later died. Brown attended and graduated from Charles City High School. The driver of the vehicle remains in serious condition with life-threatening injuries, while a second passenger was transported with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Charles City’s Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to allow a company to examine 88 acres of county-owned land to potentially bring an electrical facility to the area. During a June 11 public hearing, supervisors authorized an 18-month no-cost option to be granted to NE Land Development LLC. According to county administrator Zach Trogdon, the buyer is planning to develop a combined-cycle electrical megawatt generation facility that utilizes natural gas.
