Tabb second half run denies Lady Trojan victory bid

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:56 pm

Tabb’s invading Tigers embarked on an 18-0 run to overcome a New Kent Lady Trojan halftime lead and put the game out of reach on the way to a 43-25 Bay Rivers District basketball win. The May 4 outcome denied the Lady Trojans their first win and dropped the hosts to 0-2 on the season. “We’ve got to learn to put two halves together,” first year Lady Trojan head coach Lauren Davis said afterward. “In the first half, we moved the ball well. But in the second, they went on a run and we’ve got to learn to stop those…

Smithfield presses New Kent into submission, wins 79-22

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:54 pm

Having no answer for Smithfield’s full court zone press meant a long night for New Kent’s host Lady Trojans. Capitalizing on frequent turnovers, the visiting Lady Packers scored early and often on the way to a 79-22 win. Last Thursday’s loss dropped New Kent to 0-4 in Bay Rivers District basketball while Smithfield improved to 4-1. “We showed good things every now and then,” Lady Trojan coach Lauren Davis said. “But then good teams go on runs and we can’t recover.” Despite not getting off a shot from the floor over the first 3:15 of the contest, New Kent absorbed…

Short-handed Lady Panthers fall in opener to West Point

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:53 pm

Unable to overcome a slow start, Charles City’s host Lady Panthers could not muster the offense needed to get back in the game in dropping their basketball season opener 47-22 to West Point’s Lady Pointers. Midway through the first quarter of the Dec. 1 affair, West Point owned a 9-0 lead. Over the same span, Charles City got off only one shot from the floor and turned the ball over on seven occasions. By halftime, the Lady Panthers trailed 21-5, and matters never improved for the hosts until the visitors emptied their bench in the fourth quarter. “I have high…

Panthers whip Indians, remain unbeaten

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:50 pm

Northumberland’s Indians entered Charles City’s gym with a particular strategy in mind — control tempo with a 1-3-1 zone defense and prevent the host Panthers from turning the affair into a track meet. And it worked, almost. The visitors led for most of last Friday’s contest until the final two minutes when the Panthers’ Dominic Jones and Trevor Jones took over at the offensive end. The pair combined to score Charles City final eight points as the Panthers kept their record unblemished at 4-0 with a 59-56 victory. “This was the first game that we really had to take outside…

Balanced, but inconsistent Trojans bring down Falcons

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:49 pm

New Kent’s Trojans maintained control, never allowing their Bay Rivers District basketball clash with York’s invading Falcons to get out of hand. But they never quite managed to administer a knockout blow. New Kent led wire-to-wire in the Dec. 8 meeting, threatening on several occasions to put away the Falcons. Even though that didn’t happen, the hosts still secured a comfortable 71-61 triumph to up their record to 2-1. “We weren’t consistent, and a lot of times we did things that didn’t make sense,” said Trojan coach Ed Allen, pointing to frequent turnovers and deviation from team play that took…

NK holds off Bruton in opener

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:47 pm

With less than two minutes remaining and New Kent owning a double-digit lead, a check mark in the win column appeared certain for the host Trojans. But Bruton’s Panthers staged a furious rally as the clock wound down and had chances to either win or tie before the buzzer. Fortunately for the hosts, a Bruton three for the win caromed away and subsequent medium-range stick-back to force overtime also missed the mark as New Kent held on for a 79-77 victory in the Dec. 1 Bay Rivers District basketball opener for both. “For our first game, I’m pretty pleased,” New…

New Kent community bands together to feed those in need

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:37 pm

Thanksgiving in the Ron Stiers household traditionally means a celebration with children, grandkids, other family members, and friends sitting down to a bountiful feast. But 15 days before this year’s holiday, the Providence Forge photography studio owner suddenly envisioned a plan whereby those less fortunate in the community could have the same. The night before his revelation, he attended a meeting where the discussion topics included the current state of food pantry programs in New Kent along with the growing number of people in need of assistance. “The next morning I got to thinking I’m president of the Providence Forge…

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:35 pm

A Providence Forge man already jailed on grand larceny in New Kent County is now charged with setting two of three recent building fires in Charles City County. A second Providence Forge man also faces charges in the fire incidents, and there could be more arrests. Brandon Lee Able, 21, of 2221 Landing Road, and Justin Webster Mills, 22, of 5640 South Garden Road, face three counts each of arson, burglary, and conspiracy to commit arson. Two sets of charges stem from a Nov. 15 incident along Cypress Bank Road where what was first described as a boat shed but…
