By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:34 pm

A monetary boost for the Lanexa Fire/Rescue Station 4 building effort from New Kent’s Board of Supervisors means the temporary station could be fully operational by the end of the year. Monday night, supervisors voted 5-0 to spend $11,500 to cover cost of installing doors, a concrete apron, and engineering inspections. They also approved spending up to $10,000 for grading and applying gravel to create a driveway and vehicle turnaround. Organizers have worked tirelessly this year to raise money. Most of the close to $55,000 in work paid for to date has come from fund-raising events. Their latest effort, a…

By Alan Chamberlain | December 16, 2010 1:27 pm

While Tuesday night’s long-awaited Charles City Board of Supervisors/School Board work session fell short in the substantial decision category, chairmen on both sides termed the gathering as productive. All five members of the School Board sat down with the county’s three supervisors along with school superintendent Janet Crawley and county administrator Jack Miniclier to discuss a short list of items, all pertaining to money matters. “I think it was very productive and cordial,” supervisors’ chairman Timothy Cotman said afterward. “Some issues that needed to be addressed got discussed, and we want to collaborate on some issues. It was very positive.”…

Board deadlocked on project

By Alan Chamberlain | December 2, 2010 1:24 pm

New Kent’s five-member Board of Supervisors is “somewhat divided,” board chairman Marty Sparks said at the start of Tuesday’s special session discussion, on how to proceed with renovating the county’s Historic School. Make that evenly split. Two supervisors — District 5 representative Ray Davis and District 4 board member Stran Trout — favor proceeding with the process already under way, which follows guidelines found in the 2002 Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act (PPEA). Sparks, who represents District 2, and District 3 representative Jimmy Burrell favor embarking on another route, meaning put the project out for competitive bids. District 1…

By Community Member | December 2, 2010 1:14 pm

Unable to mount a sustained attack, New Kent’s Falcon varsity midget team fell 21-0 to Glen Lea’s Lions in the Metropolitan Youth Football League semifinals on Nov. 20 at Henrico’s Dorey Park. The contest got off to a shaky start for New Kent as the Falcons fumbled away the opening kickoff. New Kent’s defense, however, responded with a four-play stop to take over on downs. The Falcons mounted a penalty-marred drive that reached the Glen Lea 26 yard line before running out of downs. On the Lions’ next play, quarterback RaQuan Waller raced 74 yards to put Glen Lea ahead…

Reeders ran for 216 yards and three touchdowns while Evan Branch added a touchdown plus 164 yards on the ground as the New Kent Falcons’ varsity peewee team toppled Varina’s unbeaten Blue Devils 41-32 in the Metropolitan Youth Football League semifinals. The semifinal triumph at Henrico’s Dorey Park avenged the 10-1 Falcons’ lone loss, a 29-20 early season setback at the hands of Varina. In the rematch, the Falcons needed all the offensive firepower they could muster. Varina scored on its first possession,…

By Community Member | December 2, 2010 1:10 pm

New Kent’s Falcon peewees faced a formidable task — defeat Chamberlayne’s unbeaten Packers, a team that had shut out five of its 10 opponents and given up a mere six points apiece to the other five. No problem. The Falcons quickly surpassed the other Packer foes on their first possession, taking an early 7-0 advantage. And it would be a lead they would never relinquish. New Kent scored more points than Chamberlayne’s previous opponents combined in capturing last Saturday’s “Super Bowl” championship in the Metropolitan Youth Football League’s varsity peewee division with a 32-12 victory at the SportsQuest complex in…
