Lady Trojans dominate 8-0

By Alan Chamberlain | May 13, 2010 9:33 am

Cashing in on frequent open scoring opportunities, New Kent’s Lady Trojans pulled away from Washington & Lee’s visiting Eagles for an 8-0 soccer triumph. The April 30 match, that ended 12 minutes short of regulation on a slaughter rule, raised New Kent’s record above the .500 mark to 5-4-1. “We’ve played so many tight games, it’s good to change things up and give other people some playing time,” said New Kent coach Chad Honeycutt. “We started off a little slow tonight, but we finished very well.” Lady Trojan Anna Black reversed the hosts’ sluggish start at the first half’s 24-minute…

New Kent registers softball, baseball upsets over York

By Alan Chamberlain | May 13, 2010 9:30 am

Renee Silver tossed a two-hit shutout while striking out nine as New Kent’s Lady Trojans stunned York’s Bay Rivers District softball front-running Falcons 3-0. Three errors contributed to the Falcons’ downfall as New Kent registered just four hits off York hurler Hannah Winfree. “But they were quality hits,” said Lady Trojan coach Betsey Lane after watching her team improve to 5-7 in the district and 7-7 overall with the April 30 triumph. New Kent jumped on top to stay in the second inning after leadoff hitter Sarah Barnett reached base on a throwing error. Barnett took third on Nikki Jones’…

Charles City trounces Franklin in Tri-Rivers

By Alan Chamberlain | May 13, 2010 9:29 am

Seven first inning runs enabled Charles City’s host Lady Panthers to take control. And when Franklin’s Broncos closed the gap in the middle frames, the hosts reasserted dominance on the way to a 14-6 triumph. Last Thursday’s contest handed Charles City its first Tri-Rivers District softball win of the season and raised the Lady Panthers’ overall record to 2-3. Charles City is 1-2 in district play. “I’m incredibly proud of my girls,” winning coach Kathryn Costley said afterward. “We’ve allowed the other team to get ahead of us in the past, but we jumped on them today and got the…

Walk-off double clinches 8-7 NK comeback triumph

By Alan Chamberlain | May 13, 2010 9:27 am

Paul Robinson’s two-run, walk-off double climaxed a determined New Kent Trojan rally from six runs down to overcome Lafayette’s visiting Rams 8-7 in Bay Rivers District baseball. After chipping away at what had been a 7-1 Ram lead, the host Trojans entered the final inning on the short end of a 7-4 score. But Hunter Pomfrey’s bases-loaded single sliced the margin to 7-6 before Robinson’s heroics clinched last Friday’s victory. “I don’t ever remember us being down by three runs against a Bay Rivers team in the bottom of the seventh inning and coming back to win,” said a much…

By Community Member | May 13, 2010 9:23 am

Three years ago, Mary Lou Gediman took the bold step of quitting her job to concentrate on writing. And the move is starting to pay off with the publication of her first novel. “Journeywoman,” the story of a divorcee whose uneventful life takes a dramatic turn thanks to advice from a Native American, became available on-line (print on demand) to the public through Amazon and Barnes and Noble in December. Now, the Providence Forge resident is striving to get her novel on bookstore shelves. “It’s been a lot of fun, and it’s been a journey,” she said, borrowing a bit…

Convenience store robber to spend four years in prison

By Alan Chamberlain | May 13, 2010 9:22 am

Having an opportunity to steal money from a cash register drawer and then flee from law enforcement did not prompt him to walk into Rick’s Stop and Shop convenience store in Quinton last November. That’s the explanation Kenneth Lee Barnes delivered to Judge Thomas B. Hoover during the defendant’s May 3 sentencing in New Kent Circuit Court on charges of grand larceny and eluding police. “I wasn’t in the right state of mind,” Barnes told the judge. “I had no intention of doing that action. I went in to get a cold drink. I was dehydrated.” But Barnes, 49, of…

By Alan Chamberlain | May 13, 2010 9:19 am

Bicycle and fitness enthusiasts are fully endorsing a proposal to widen Route 155, thus allowing for bike paths along both sides of the highway through New Kent and Charles City counties. And those seeking enhanced safety for both motorists and bike riders are applauding the plan, too. Several local residents voiced comments to Virginia Department of Transportation officials during a May 4 public meeting hosted by VDOT at New Kent Fire and Rescue Station 1 in Providence Forge. The meeting focused on a 1.8-mile section of Route 155 starting just north of the Charles City line and running through Providence…

Kennel owner found guilty of operating without permit

By Alan Chamberlain | May 13, 2010 9:16 am

There are controlled drug buys, and then there are controlled dog buys. Law enforcement in Charles City employed the latter to ensnare a dog kennel owner who was operating illegally in the county. A Charles City Circuit Court judge found Linda Howard, owner of Big Dog Kennel, guilty on two misdemeanor counts of operating a commercial kennel without a special use permit following a May 4 trial. One count had been appealed from lower court while the second stemmed from an undercover officer’s visit to the Rottweiler kennel, located at 5226 North Warriner Road in the county’s western end. Howard…

NK budget public hearing rescheduled for May 26

By Alan Chamberlain | May 13, 2010 9:14 am

Due to an advertising glitch, New Kent’s Board of Supervisors has been forced to move last Monday’s scheduled public hearing on the county’s proposed fiscal 2011 budget to the group’s work session on May 26. By law, localities are required to advertise budgets at least seven days in advance of a public hearing date. Last week’s advertisement appeared just five days before Monday’s scheduled hearing. County officials discovered the oversight late last week. The public hearing on the county’s proposed $50.2 million budget and accompanying 70-cent real estate tax rate and fee schedule is now set for 7 p.m. on…
