Prospective ‘Historic School’ renovators pitch proposals
In 45 minutes or less, convince New Kent’s Board of Supervisors that your proposal for renovating the county’s “Historic School” is the best. That was the task confronting representatives of four construction firms and their teams bidding on the project that aims to convert the main 1930s building into a new home for New Kent’s branch of Heritage Public Library. A second building constructed in 1952 is slated to hold offices for the county’s School Board. The work also entails renovating the courtyard between the two buildings. Lady Trojans denied BRD tourney berth
For New Kent’s Lady Trojans, the task ahead seemed simple — win and get in to the Bay Rivers District field hockey tournament. But Warhill’s visiting Lions also faced the same situation. And in the end, it was the Lions who prevailed in the Oct. 22 regular season finale, securing the last seeded tourney spot with a 4-0 shutout. 4H club forms
Charles City 4H Horse and Pony Club has recently formed in the county and is seeking members age 9-18. There is also a Cloverbud program for ages 5-8. Meetings are held the third Thursday each month in the county government building. The next meeting is Nov. 18, 6 p.m. Club leaders are Ashley Nicholas, a 4H alumna and professional riding instructor/trainer, and Jerel Johnson, a Charles City native and professional farrier. The club conducts learning activities through clinics, lesson, field trips, guest speakers, and projects. Eudailey, Savage lead NK
Becca Eudailey finished seventh overall to lead New Kent’s Lady Trojans to fourth place in last Thursday’s Bay Rivers District cross country meet and a spot in this week’s Region I meet. Only the top four teams advance to the regional. Eudailey toured the 3.1-mile William and Mary course in 21:03.7. Completing New Kent’s top five scoring spots were Kristy Galloway (21st, 22:27.8), Holly Sheffield (22nd, 22:38.7), Amber Owens (25th, 22:52.7), and Madie Miles (26th, 22:54.9). Trojans end drought, blank Jamestown 21-0
New Kent’s Trojans snapped their disappointing string of losses, celebrating homecoming last Friday night with a 21-0 shutout of Bay Rivers District foe Jamestown for their first win of the season. The victory lifted New Kent out of sole possession of last place in the district football standings and into a tie with the Eagles and Warhill. All three teams have one district win apiece. Charles City sends message, upsets No. 4 Franklin 44-41
Franklin’s Broncos lived up to expectations as the state’s number four Group A football team, opening a 21-0 first quarter lead over Charles City’s host Panthers. By halftime, the visitors led 33-16 and appeared on the way to ruining Charles City’s homecoming celebration. But in building a 7-0 record, Franklin had not encountered a team as resilient — and talented — as Charles City. The Broncos learned that lesson in the second half. Sex offender convicted in 2002 violates probation
A retired horseracing jockey convicted in 2002 in New Kent Circuit Court of aggravated sexual battery involving a 10 year-old girl must serve a year in prison after being found guilty of violating terms of his probation. Michael Marinaccio was age 59 when he was convicted. He served five years of a 20-year prison sentence. The remaining 15 years were suspended for life. Now 68 and living in Florida, Marinaccio was returned to New Kent last week after authorities here learned he did not follow supervision prescribed by Florida probation authorities. Historic School’ cafeteria use on hold pending agreement
A decision on what groups get to use the cafeteria at New Kent’s “Historic School” is on hold at least until Nov. 10. That’s the date of the next county Board of Supervisors meeting and also when county officials are aiming to have all interested parties on board in terms of a shared use agreement. All agree the cafeteria is ideal for the county’s Brown Bag food program, but whether the site is ready before Thanksgiving, as requested earlier by Brown Bag representatives, remains up in the air. NK schools’ capital plan lists only two projects for 2011-12
New Kent School Board members have voted preliminary approval for a five-year capital improvement plan totaling almost $35.5 million. But only a fraction of the proposed spending, just over $366,000, is pegged for the next fiscal year. New Kent woman wins grand prize in Food Lion contest
Marion Banks summarized her grand prize trip for winning Food Lion’s “Winner’s Circle Celebration, Ultimate Shopping Spree” in one word. “Wow!” She and her husband, William, received a two-day, all expenses paid trip to Charlotte, N.C. where she joined NASCAR driver Kyle Busch for a five-minute shopping spree in a local Food Lion store.
