Letter to the Editor: Says history of the country has been villainized

Our nation’s history is a source of fascination and inspiration to me. The more I study the people, events, and miraculous occurrence that shaped our past, the more I realize that America is exceptional! Events of the last several months have left me brokenhearted. Tunnel vision narratives that have distorted our nation’s heritage and villainized many of our country’s greatest leaders by focusing solely on their faults. New Kent Lions Club Shrimp Feast cancelled

The New Kent County Lions Club has officially cancelled their annual Shrimp Feast. “Because of the virus that we have unfortunately in our country today, it is not going to be possible to hold the event in 2020,” the organization said in a press release. “We want to thank our community for your support in the past including all of our sponsors and the individuals who have supported it year after year.” The annual fundraiser assists with providing health screenings, eye exams, and other medical services to the community. The pandemic has simply changed the way we do things in this country. We have faced more people who are dealing with depression and suicides. As we transition into the time of year that revolves around holidays and culture, it is important that we think about those people who are suffering with those thoughts, especially with depression. Free meals available for Charles City students until Dec. 31

Students who attend Charles City County Public Schools will receive free meals until Dec. 31, 2020. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved waivers for local school divisions to extend the Summer Food Service Program for free meals due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All children will be eligible for the free meals whether they are learning in-person or virtually and regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.
