Charles City Elementary School will have pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten registration on Thursday, Apr. 11, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Registration documents required for pre-kindergarten include original birth certificate, legal parent/guardian photo identification, custody documents (if applicable), residency verification, income document (tax forms from 2018 or W2), PK/VPI application, student registration form, and school entrance health form. A New Kent County man has been awarded the Carnegie Medal for saving two people’s lives. David Connelly rescued Brian and Mary Turner on Dec. 22, 2016, after the couple’s vehicle had rolled down an embankment and began to become submerged in the Little River in southwest Virginia. Connelly pulled on the driver’s side door and forced it over. He unlatched the seatbelt and pulled both victims to safety. The Carnegie Medal is given throughout the United States and Canada to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others.
With the population boom in New Kent continuously rising, there has been dialogue among citizens concerning if the area will become another small suburb, similar to adjacent counties. And while some citizens do not want to see that occur, it’s happening. The Bottoms Bridge and Quinton area is the current craze of growth in central Virginia. With a new elementary school on the way along with a planned medical center, the amenities for New Kent citizens are on the rise, and that’s a good thing. The American Red Cross, in partnership with Charles City and New Kent County Fire Departments, will be installing free smoke alarms. The event is part of the “Sound the Alarm” national program sponsored by the Red Cross. The organization’s goal is to install 100,000 smoke alarms nationwide. Smoke alarms will be installed from Apr. 27-May 12. Much has been said in the 97th District race about the vote on a budget which included Medicaid expansion. What if the budget had failed? Governor Ralph Northam would have let the state government shut down. In order to reopen state government, General Assembly Republicans would have not only had to swallow Medicaid expansion, but they would have to do it with no strings attached. There was no option of “no Medicaid expansion ever.” There were enough Republicans in southwestern Virginia with large numbers of uninsured who would have joined Democrats in making full-on Medicaid expansion law.
